My first Seated Liberty coin of 2006

I have just about hammered the poor little park to death...and really consider myself lucky to have found the 1918 merc yesterday, so I figured "OK, it's time to get permission to do some private home sites again.

I'd had my eye on a ca 1880 farmhouse for some time and finally mustered the courage to ask permission to swing the coil there. I was there a total of maybe 10 minutes before I found this seated liberty dime.....and in the ensuing 2 hours....with visions of barber coins swimming around in my head....I found absolutely nothing. There is much iron in the ground at this particular place, and the grass is a bit high, making it tiresome to swing the coil.

I figure this dime was churned up when they poured the flagpole pad in 1991 (signed and dated by somebody's finger in the wet concrete), that's exactly 100 years after the dime was minted.....and a neat coincidence.

I'll probably try the place again once the grass is cut....but I'm not as optimistic about the place as I was going in. There has to be a few things there to be found yet.

I'm going to need a few more sites....

Verrry Nice!
If you can get into some 1880's farm houses, you can expect to find more of those. They are in there.
WTG!

I've actually done that before......mowed the front section of a drive in theatre, where the old playground used to be....for hunting priviledges. I ended up turning up a couple war nickels and 13 silver dimes there.

Nice Seated coin.........Congrats and good luck in the return trip!!! 8)

Nice dime, Wyatt. :o

I've had plenty of hunts like that....I find a great coin within the first few minutes and spend the next couple of hours searching....and finding no other keepers. I sometimes think that it's just intuition to walk to a site and dig a great coin in the first dig.

I think intuition plays a role too. I have gone on a few outings in places that wouldn't excite anybody....and made nice finds pretty quickly. I once went to detect at my dentist's office.....got out of the car...walked 10 feet, turned the detector on and immediately found a 44 washinton quarter....and have found no more silver there to this day. I've been there 3 more times.

I also was drawn to a yard that just looked like original turf....and a house built in the mid 50s.....but I found a 42 walker there within 20 minutes of starting to detect there.

Nice 6000, I enjoy reading your posts as I too have a 6000. They are hard on those dimes, aern't they!!! Curious, I'm no expert on old coins, but I thought that the back of the dime that you showed in this post is from a Barber dime. At least, that's the backing on a Barber dime. I can't remember what a Liberty seated dime looks like on the back...........Cya for now!!!!! Nascarfan

That looks like a really nice coin. Did you have to use a little soap and water or did it come out of the ground looking like that?

nice coin. it looks to be in good condition
