Decided to switch gears today and leave the detector at home in favor of a pair of hiking shoes. There's an area near where I live that is well known to rock hounds for being a treasure trove. It's called Amethyst Cove and really lives up to its name. The problem is its well off the beaten path and is an adventure just to get there. It's a 20 minute hike up a mountain and then a 500 ft descent to the beach. The descent is almost straight down and is in fact straight down in a couple places. There is a series of ropes from the top to the bottom and they are absolutely needed. The descent was terrifying in spots. Luckily I was cover.pprepared with gloves but if I didn't have those there are gloves left at the top and bottom for anyone to use. Once on the beach it's a 3km hike to the cove. You've got to be aware of the tides as we have the world's highest and fastest so it would not be difficult to get caught. It's a sheer cliff so you could end up having to swim for it. I planned it to arrive on the beach at high tide and work the beach out and in. The beach is absolutely littered with semi-precious gems, agates, chert, quartz and all manner of rocks. I filled my bag and got a couple decent pieces of amethyst which was my reason for going.
Beautiful day for a hike...the climb back up the mountain was torture but really worth it. Enjoy the pics!
