My First LC. Oh, wait. My First & SECOND LC!

Hi Everyone,

I'm on Cloud #9 - Thanks to Buddy Brant. He offered up a new site and I'm glad I went.

20 yards from the truck and 5 minutes in...score! An 1856 LC - my first LC and now my oldest coin. I hunted for another hour and a half and decided to head back to the truck to warm up a bit. Swingin' the coil on the way to the truck and...score!!! ANOTHER LC...and even older! This one was an 1850.

That's 2 LC's...within 2 hours...about 20 yards apart.

I realize how fortunate I am. Thanks again to Buddy Brant for sharing his new spot!

Cleaned with tap water and a soft brush. Should I go farther with it? If so - what method do you recommend?

Thanks for looking and Happy Hunting,

Nice finds! :icon_thumright: Large Cents are my absolute favorite coin to find, they SCREAM into my headphones on the Sovereign :headbang:.

You may want to try a short bath in heated peroxide, I've cleaned up a couple large cents this way and they turned out awesome!

I'm working on cleaning a 1831 large cent, soaking it in olive oil. Good luck if they came
from a field, the fertilizer just kills them. I've tried the peroxide method,it will work
but don't leave them in to long. You won't like the results! HH Rvrpilot

When I've used the peroxide method, I really don't like soaking the coin in the heated peroxide. Usually I will just heat the peroxide, dip a Q-Tip in it and use it to clean the coin. Once I'm done with one end of the tip (any darkening of the cotton) I'll switch to the other end. I keep doing it until the tips don't change color. It's tedious, but I get to control how the cleaning goes and that generally avoid a catastrophe, like removing detail. Generally I just leave them be. Better to have a semi-shabby looking coin you can address later when you're more skillful than a coin you look at and say "Sure wish I hadn't done that.....".

Congrats, Bryon. You really got us started when you hit that first one about the time you turned your detector on. Great hunt and a great story for future years. Way to go man.

Re: My First LC. Oh, wait. My First & SECOND LC!

i don't know about cleaning these coins but if you are use regular olive oil not extra virgin only the regular stuff or use some tape and push the tape between all of the grooves and details of the coins and peel the tape off slowly but this can remove unstable patina an pit your coins
