I had some time to kill on Sunday so I decided to check a creek for some arrow heads. The creeks have been very low due to the lack of rain in the last 30 days. No luck but I headed up to detect a site that I found an 1866 2 cent piece on earlier this month. I was loaded up with bug spray this time, can't stand the ticks. Well this area is very trashy and I use a big coil so I found a lot of iron. I searched around the old stone fireplace where I dug this nice 1856 Large Cent. This is my first. It's a nice heavy coin. I did rub it a bit with steel wool to see the date. Now I am excited about getting back there to find more! :icon_pirat:

Great job! Now the coppers will just pour into your pouch...keep putting yourself in early sites and you'll see.

You broke the ice, they will come easier now! :icon_thumleft:

I would like to find one of those Flying Eagle pennys next. Never even knew they existed until I saw one on here last night.

Congratulations on you first North CLINA LC
There are a couple of varieties to be aware of with this series, though none of these varieties affect values too much. First, be aware that with the 1840 and 1842 large cents, these were struck with “small dates” and “large dates.” In 1843, the Liberty head became slightly larger and the lettering on the reverse was made a bit larger as well. Also, the 1855 and *1856 dates feature a numeral “5” that either slants or is upright.
