Over two afternoon hunts at an old dam in my area I made some interesting finds. Does this look like a Large Cent? I scuffed the side and it's definetly copper; my Sovereign has it very high like a clad penny. I can see zero detail. It was down maybe 10". I found it very near the button.

The only way to get a relief back on it is a few seconds in acid and then water. :wave:
looks like a bank stamp on it just a guess with no details.

Looks like a flat button to me because the back has the bump on it where the thread hole was. :icon_study:

The button photo is on top. He mentioned it in his post. The photos are titled "button top" and "button bottom." The mystery coin is below them, with a quarter for size reference.

::)

Have you tried a charcoal rubbing on it? Don SJ could perhaps help you out... But for now I'd say that you should weigh it. That'd help greatly in its identification.

I agree, the photo is a bit blurry but things do line up and you can see the partial date, that coin with proper cleaning has enough detail to ID without a doubt.
I will go out on a limb and say it is a 1796 Liberty Cap. If you can weigh it in grams, it should be in the 10+ or - a few tenths something range. If thicker with edge lettering than over 12+ grams for a 1794, but 1796 seems to be the most common one found, at least for me.

Want to add, congrats on your first Large Cent and if it is a Liberty Cap, that is one heck of a way to start off! :)
Don't worry about cleaning it, not worth much to any collector in that condition and it does have a ding, so at minimum soak in water and use cotton swabs to gently bring out detail by removing dirt, not coin. :)

You are the man and you guys are the guys!! I can definitely see the "cap" and the straight line which would be the stick right by her neck. Sorry for the pic quality, my wife is getting a good DC for her b-day next month. Thanks for the help and I'm 90% convinced you guys are correct. It's a shame the quality was poor but I'll take poor over nothing. I did get a decent 1890IH right next to the copper, so it was one for the win column.
