When I found this piece I coudn't see any detail on it and assumed it was a piece of a clock or something. After a brief cleaning at home I noticed the 'O' on the reverse and was shocked to find that it was a large cent! My very first!! After some discussion on a Facebook forum group, I think it is a matron head which has been made into a spur rowel or a gear of some sort. Still amazed and can't stop looking at this beauty! That's a killer find sir.

Congrats on your first LC. I have seen them made into whizzers, conchos, washers and buttons... but never a spur rowel.

The more I look at it, the more I like it.

This is really cool! One of a kind for sure! Congrats!

pretty sweet find

The teeth are pretty symmetrical on it. I wish it could talk...That is one awesome L.C.

That is probably the only one of those in existence. Congrats on digging that one. :occasion14: It deserves a prominent place in your display.

Wow ! Now that Large Cent/ Relic has massive character and eye appeal ! Super unique find - way better than the standard Matron Head large cent - very exciting find !!!

Very nice,, I like your thoughts on connecting it to a spur. I have no clue of what it was supposed to be but it is really a conversation starter.
Congratulations

Amazing find.....I too wonder the story behind it.....used to replace something they just couldn't run down to local hardware store and get....and the time it took to get it right....Holy Cow.

A long time ago I found a whole spur with an indian head cent for the rowel. The penny was cut just like that one. Unfortunately I gave it away. I have regretted that for a long time.

If it is a spur rowel...
theoretically there's another one to match it?....
Congrats on such a beauty of a LC.....

The spur story is so cool. I really like it! Very nice find, I think I would frame it!
