It is Pewter ... but it was found in a soil that did not corrode it.

I bet you were smiling when you popped that out of the ground. :hello2:

I think a good amount of 1812 buttons turn up there (Detroit River) so what makes the most sense is an early pattern button was just among the unit during 1812. (The buttons from each period are very close in design) So that soldier quite possibly seen action in both the Revolution and War of 1812. I'd further base that theory on whatever was found with it.

Yes ...At Fort Mackinac there was a detachment in 1784-1785... well so one book says ..

In that case, especially if you found it close to the fort (or think it was from there) I would call it Rev War with no connection to 1812. It dates 1768-1786. Great find in that condition.

Fort Mackinac was founded during the American Revolution. Believing Fort Michilimackinac at what is now Mackinaw City was too vulnerable to American attack, the British moved the fort to Mackinac Island in 1780. Americans took control in 1796. In July 1812, in the first land engagement of the War of 1812 in the United States , the British captured the fort. In a bloody battle in 1814 the Americans attempted but failed to retake the fort. It was returned to the United States after the war. The fort remained active until 1895. During these years Mackinac Island was transformed from a center of the fur trade into a major summer resort

Well I guess the answer is back to deciding if you can include 1812 by what it was found with. It's some interesting history regardless, and any Rev War button find makes for a great day. Especially when it looks like that.
