Strange mix of finds today. Took a trip with 2 of my MD buddies to a spot in AZ that had an old Service station and store back in what we can figure about the 1920s as all the coins from this place are 1920s or older.
I started the day with a 1925 wheat after 1.5 hrs of none of us finding anything. 10 minutes later I then found my first Indian Head penny 1887. I was thrilled to finally find one. My buddy found an unexploded artillery shell. Looks like a tank shell. We spoke to a local that came by and he went to the Sheriff's office to report it. We carried on and then my friends started finding 1920s and older Mercs and a 1903 Barber dime. I also found what we believe is a .50 caliber machine gun round.
Also found a few older shotgun shell heads.

Any help on the round would be appreciated.

Nice find! I'm waiting to find my first Indian head penny as well.

Wonder if the area played host to a military firing range? Is there a military base nearby that has tanks???

Yes, a couple of old Patton camps are nearby. Previously I found a naval button and one of my friends found a military button as part of his finds on Monday. The artillery shell was found close to the RR tracks so we figured it may have fallen off a train or something. Strange it wasn't accounted for when loading off the train though. My machine gun round was found near a foundation probably 200 or more yards from the tracks so maybe someone carried it over there and then left it in their yard.

Nice finds! That artillery shell could be a leftover CW round, maybe a Parrot round or a Hutchkis. Would be a nice keeper after it has been defused, LOL. HH, Mike

Careful of where you hunt out there, all of the Patton Training Camps are off limit to MD'ing. There are tons of unexploded rounds all around the area. You can hunt all around the camps, just not the camps themselves. It's best to check with the BLM in Needles, CA they can and will tell you just where you can and can't hunt. There is also an old military dump right by Essex that you may still be able to hunt in. Have fun and stay safe. HH

No worries. We weren't at the Patton camps at all. We were hunting right off of an old highway and train track. Not even close to the camps....

That old service station was probably a Shell

Neat finding such a place. Probably lots of coins dropped over the years.
