My son and I were detecting on our family's farm when I popped my first Indian cent! This evening I lightly cleaned it with some distilled water and a soft toothbrush to remove the grit, so we could see the mint mark, and we both could not believe it. 1909 S! 307,000 mintage! I never thought finding a penny could make me so happy.

nice! looks like the first time is a charm, wish I could be so lucky. did you buy a lotto ticket?

Petty cool. I think most of us would love to find one of the rarer coins of any denomination. Having a penny worth several hundred dollars even at the low end of the grading spectrum would bring a rush

If that's your first Indian, I guess the 1877 will be your next! Huge congrats on finding a key date as your first Indian!

Nothing like starting off at the top ! Congrats on your first Indian.

Awesome find in any condition ! :occasion14:

I'm voting banner, I'm a banner kind of guy. This Indian has a very cool description on the NGC website. Here is a link to your coin.

I know for myself I'm still learning about US coinage, this year mint is one of those multifaceted years because of the change in the two series. Along with the VDB 1909 it reminds me of the 1916 Dime. All around , very interesting to me.

Congrats on a great find, no less a great memory because you were with your son on your own property too!

Now I have to go through all my Indians because I can't remember, for some reason last year I all of the sudden realized that there could be a mint mark on a Indian. I don't know if it was because I found one or found a 1909 without a mint mark? haaaaaaa Or more than likely I just seen it on the website while I was browsing. I'm always on a treasure hunt, sometimes because of my bad memory.

Sorry for hijacking your thread, I got a 1908 and a 1909 both have no mint mark, finding both of these within 45 minutes by car of the Philadelphia mint makes sense.

Great find! One of only two I need to complete the set, the other being the 1877. Don't see many 08 or 09 S's in the east.

Thanks for the link! Love this: "The only rarities for the 1909-S Indian Head Cent are heavily worn pieces, as so few escaped detection long enough to wear down."

Out of curiosity, does anyone have an idea what my coin would be worth in this poor condition? We would never sell it, but it is certainly fun to know!

Very nice, congrats!!

Nice find my man! Congrats.

That's a Jim Dandy of an Indian! Congrats! Still waiting to find my first Indian.

Very good Find! Excellent! :icon_thumright:
My very first IH was in Connecticut, all the way across the country from my home!

Congratulations on finding your first IH Cent in such beautiful condition and a rare one at that!
