Detector(s) used
White's MXT
Hello everyone!

I believe I may have found my first gold! YES! :hello2:

Now, I don't want to get too excited because it might not actually be gold, but I have a strong feeling it is. There are no markings on the inside, but it has a very soft surface to it and there are some "real gold-looking" scratches on it. It also has a very prominent visual weld on the inside although you can't feel it when the ring is on. It weighs 7 grams.

Here's the interesting thing: I started metal detecting in June. (I bought a White's MXT with a spare DD coil.) I have been using both the stock and DD coil with great success, finding all kinds of silver and old copper, bronze and other fun stuff in the ground. But all along I had been planning to buy a 10 x 12" Excelerator (S.E.F) coil. I just wanted to wait to see how I liked the hobby before buying any more equipment. Well, I definitely like the hobby. In fact, I love it. So after reading a lot of positive reviews and getting people's great feedback, I ordered the SEF coil. I also bought a Lesche digger to replace my gator (which is beaten to a pulp now) and a pair of Gray Ghosts to get better sound. They were all great investments.

And here's the kicker - I just received the new stuff just yesterday. Last night after work, I went over the the post office to get the box, then went out to one of my regular parks and found a ton of pennies and nickels that I had previously missed with the other coils. Then tonight I went out to another site (old school from 1910) and found this gold ring! Now, I'm not saying I owe this gold find to the SEF coil, because I most probably still would have dug the signal had I been using the stock 9" coil or the DD coil, but it is an interesting situation, that's for sure! No doubt I'll be using this SEF on a few of my previously hunted sites to see what else (if anything) I can scrape from those areas. It really does seem to work very well.

Anyway, just super glad to finally get the gold monkey off my back. Ironically, just last week I found a massive "gold" ring at another old park, and my heart was racing until I read the "HEAVY ELECTROPLATE" message on the inside. This (hopefully real) gold ring more than makes up for it!

I promised my first gold to the wife, and I'm still waiting for her to get home from work. Is she gonna be happy! :icon_thumright:

Nice looking ring. Now test it with a magnet to see if it sticks to it. If it dosen't stick tothe magnet it is a good bet it is gold. That is how I test the chains that I find....Matt

Hi Matt! I tested with a magnet. It doesn't stick. Thanks for the tip! :icon_thumleft:

I think I finally earned my nickname. ;D

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but... :icon_scratch: I don't think its real gold since 1906 its been the law to mark all gold. :o The fake stuff generally not real is not marked, it can be but not likely. :dontknow: Also it dose not look like gold to me it looks to bright. :icon_scratch: I'm not saying this to be mean or devalue your finds i'm just saying what I feel and I think you should know what you have. :-\ Now of coarse I could be wrong and the thing you need to do is take it to a jeweler and have them acid test it to tell for sure. :icon_thumleft: I hope i'm wrong please keep us posted. :notworthy:

Good find !! :icon_thumleft: :headbang:

Keep @ it and HH !! ;D :D

MUD, thanks for letting me know about that 1906 law! You learn something new every day. I'll get it tested and let you guys know what I find. If this one isn't gold, the wife will definitely send me back out to look for more. :laughing7:

Hello there, some possible good news for you. Although the law since 1906 says it should be marked there are plenty of pieces out there that are gold and aren't stamped, made by individuals etc. I have found several hundred pieces of gold in 30 plus years and probably have around 15-20 with no marking at all. These pieces I took to jewelers and had tested, some of these are my nicest finds ever, some with diamonds!..Question , where does this ring read on your machine? If that ring is gold it should read foil, nickle, tab in that area depending on your make of machine. A gold plated copper or silver ring is not going to read in the gold area...machines will read the base metal not the plating. Also a plated or gold filled ring will corrode or chip if it's in the water or ground for a long time.....I found 3 18k GEP rings this year alone, took a second without even looking inside to know they were no good. Hope your ring is a keeper let us know.

Now you need to change your name to Iwillfindmoregold :tongue3:

Congrats on a great find

Good news, guys! I got it tested, and it's gold... 18kt! Thanks for all the positive feedback. I'll be out on the weekend with my new coil to search for more.

Good luck to all! :icon_thumright:

EDIT: BURLIVES, this read in the tab range with the new coil, and since it's a new coil I'm finding a bit of variation in the VDIs so I'm disregarding my usual numbers and digging more. I even switched off the DISC completely for a while and just dug away. When I dug this, I was expecting a nickel, let's put it that way.

:icon_thumleft: WTG on your first gold, you did fantastic!!!!! That's an awesome ring, bet your wife loves it!!!!! :icon_thumleft:

Hey Brother,

Could have told you 18k off the get go. Beautiful deep tint to it. The design also doesnt look american which dont use a whole lot of 18k. Ive found lots of gold rings without marks in them. some rub off because the stamps are to heavy and some are etched which also rub off. And then some are a bit crude and not given a stamp at all. Ring does look old and would imagine it dating a back a minute or 2. However you are in Canada and being that Canada has lots of asians especially in the Vancouver area I wouldnt probably wouldnt be reaching that it could be from asia. Does have an asian design and I have found several rings like this, 18k, one of them just last week. Congrats on the gold! Yes you did live up to your name. Magnets are a great way of testing for gold putting the magnet at a slight angle and tossing it on the magnet if not connection then you should be golden, doesnt mean its not gold plated silver, had a bunch of those as well. Overall I have some testing solution which I dont even use anymore and some auto testers out there exist some people use. But really overtime youll be able to tell gold or not, plated or not. Hope this gave a little info.

Super!, I'm glad that was gold. Just read Crackbadgers post(and if anyone would know it would certainly be him) and echoing what he said about the way the ring looked, it had a high karat look to it but I didn't want to speculate. Once found a huge bracelet with a real deep color to it and it was marked 917(22k) kinda the same "look" as your ring. Your ring a $210 bullion value find. Congrats again!

even if its not gold, it's still cool. I found a little brass ring last week and it was still fun. Gotta dig a lot to find the treasure.

Great find and glad it's the real deal !! Congrats and :icon_sunny: find more gold 8) :headbang:

I was thinking 18k when I first saw the pic before reading comments. Good job :headbang:
