My first find ever! 5/25

Hello I'm new to these forums but they seem like a very fun community! Today I was walking along a sandbar on the Kansas River and I found what I believe to be an arrowhead. I've dreamed of finding artifacts since childhood and today I think I've found my first. I'm sure you can imagine my excitement, think of your first find Well I hope it turns out to be something, I believe it is because the edges appear modified and one face is very smooth as if it were knapped off from a core. Too many signs to ignore, however I'm very amateur and would love to hear what the more experienced think. Here are pictures from my find. Thank you

nice find, congrats, imo it looks more like a tool or prismatic blade because it's uniface and has a median ridge.

Thirty7 is correct. It is a tool not an arrowhead but still a fantastic first find. Congratulations and welcome to this forum. Imagine that sharp edge being used say as a knife or maybe something to scrape a hide or even quarter out or cut up your next meal. Lots of history there and to think you were the first person to touch it in many many years.

Thank you for the encouragement. I'd studied artifacts a little and I don't know why I didn't think of something other than "arrowhead" haha. I look at it now and it's obvious it isn't a point. I love the feeling of it, when I grip it I feel and imagine the uses. I'd spent the past 10 years from about age 13 until today looking around and never finding anything. Not until recently did I put more thought into where I should look. I wonder how I can identify more about the tool. Knowing it was found in NE Kansas is a start but I'm not sure what era or tookkit these blades are associated with.

That tool is from the dawn of man till late times. What you need to do is go explore the area you found it in and see if you can find an arrowhead, Broke or not and then you can start figuring out time frames thru identification. You are on the right path.
The people on here have a great variety of knowledge and are always kind enough to help you. They help me all the time.

Definitely looks manmade. Scraper or flesher maybe. I have noticed that once you find one artifact that you start noticing them easier. Once you get the eye for it you'll start seeing them everywhere. There are a lot of points and tools posted here that were found on creekbanks and in gravel bars.

I've wanted to find old relics since a kid. I used to find little fossils like crinoids but I still can't believe I finally found something like this. I was in disbelief at first that I had really found anything yesterday. I am really excited about all the encouragement and feedback already from this forum. This is exactly what I had hoped it would be when I signed up. I'll be going back to this sandbar later today and give it another look. The problem with most kansas waters is that they are muddy and slow moving. Some creeks are a bit cleaner however. So I've figured my time would be best spent looking around on the sandbars. Does this sound reasonable?

Hey Teddy, welcome to Treasure net. There are some great folks here in all the different topics but I am amazed at the knowledge and finds of the folks here in fossils and artifacts. Go back through some of the old posts and you will learn a lot, I did.

I know exactly what you mean about the muddy water around here too, it's too thick to drink and too thin to plow. I hunt sand bars and gravel bars after high water and have had a little luck. I am just starting to walk fields so not so much yet there. The best advice I can give you is "bring home anything you think might be a fossil or artifact" I had no idea what we had found when my daughter pointed this out on a sandbar after a flood http://forum.treasurenet.com/index.php/topic,77758.msg568582.html#msg568582 if we had left it there someone else would have got it.

Nobody will care if you post a pic and ask for an ID on something here. Everyone is very helpful and will be honest with you about it being an artifact or a geofact. Good luck in your future hunts, looking forward to more of your posts.

I've always wanted to find artifacts and geofacts, but now I have the fever! I just can't wait to get back out on that sandbar, I spent almost no time on it because I went down there with a couple friends just walking around. However anytime I'm out in an area I think might be hiding something I'm always keeping my eyes on the ground! I'm headed back there today or maybe tomorrow, weather permitting. =D

If I went years never finding anything and that didn't discourage me I'm not about to let other people's success discourage me =P Actually I'm happy for other people's success! Two of my great grandparents came from Ohio to Kansas/Missouri area on a covered wagon and they brought with them some neat Ohio points and even a hatchet stone. I'm sure there is lots of fun hunting to be done!

Some days if you find just a broke one its a good day. Everyone lives in diffrent areas and some places the points are easier to come by. Thats ok though because thay share them with us on here.
Everything I hunt is way under water and now make take a month or two for the bancks and creeks to clear up.
Never be discouraged.Its a life long hobby. Good luck

Hello teddyrobo, I live in KS (& Hunt, I started in about '07? ) the KAW also. the picture in my side bar I found on a sand bar! I know what you mean about mud. I love to watch the river when goes up/down there's always something new.
I hunt the River when the river goes up its Creeks & fields also like I said I'm fairly new but am learning more every day.

This is a great place for info on whatever you find!
