Hi Everyone,

I took advantage of another unusually warm day and went back to the spot that produced the 1896 IH that I recently found.

I was pleasantly surprised to hit not one, but two bells...10 feet apart.

Beautiful Crotal Bell - decorated bottom hemisphere - marked No 3 on bottom - missing suspension loop - looks to have been silver plated? Can anyone date this?

This bell is 1 1/4 inched long...copper/white metal...and I swear, it has a blue glass "jingle" inside it. Am I seeing things?
These are my first real bell finds...any information would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks gang....you're the best!

Nice looking bells, congrat's on your first ones. :icon_thumright:

Crotal bells...some peeps call them rumble bells. They are no longer classifed as bells though...the "experts" consider them rattles. Not sure why someone would want to become a bell expert ...but to each his own. They are only noted for having iron balls for the rattle...but from peice to peice I suppose that doesn't mean someone didn't actually put a glass ball in one...if it is truly glass though I am sure that would catch the fancy of any REAL bell collector...I wouldn't just GIVE it away :) Congrats on a great day!

nice bell!!!! MR TUFF

Congrats on the bells, always a nice surprise when they pop out of the ground !! :icon_thumright:

I like em, not found a good one (not damaged) yet.
Her is a good site for dating them.

nice job, I have found quite a lot of crotals during my fall field hunts and I am surprised the top broke off, that is the thickest part. Does it still ring ok?

Congrats on your first - i always like finding them - dont know why - probably for 2 reasons - if you get one - there is is probably some other good old stuff near by and 2nd reason is - if you are getting these it means you might be in a virgin spot cause they go off so nice - who would have missed them
