My first Coppas! LC, King George II Halfpence and a Draped Bust LC "Updated"

Went to an on colonial site that Ryan and Aaron hunted a week or so ago. Aaron found a very old shoe or knee buckle that is posted in "what is it". Ryan came up with some LC's.
Well I found my first and second LC's. Cant see any dates. The other copper I think is a Halfpence or Farthing. I can read "Georg" on one side. On the other I can see an arm to the left holding something, there is a "T" in line with the arm.
Also found a 39 Merc, 1904 Indian, 1926 Buffalo couple wheats earliest being 1911.
Two buttons, one hav a roman numeral V on it. May be military. The last item was thgis cool little shield shaped lapel tack? Really don't know what it is.

Re: My first LC's and a Farthing or Halfpence!

Halfpennies are larger than farthings. Yours looks to be the size of a halfpenny. Nice finds.

Re: My first Coppas! LC's and a Farthing or Halfpence

Congrats on some great finds!!! ;D

If you ever find out anything on the shield item, please PM me...I found one almost exactly the same as yours last year. Seems to be an ornamental item....but to what?????? ???

Great job!!

The shield shaped thing is horse-related, and Old. I forget what it's called...but someone will chime in soon.

Re: My first Coppas! LC's and a Farthing or Halfpence

A horse item? Very small? Maybe affixed to leather. Seems like it would fall off very easily. Maybe it was tacked into wood? xlt nh got a pic of the one you found?

Re: My first Coppas! LC's and a Farthing or Halfpence

Awesome day Brian! The copper I came up with turned out to be an 1829 half cent with nice detail after a few rounds in hot peroxide. It's funny how on the way over there you were telling me how you hadn't ever found any large copper. Very nice haul! Still so much more ground to cover there. Are you going to try the peroxide on the LC's?

Re: My first Coppas! LC's and a Farthing or Halfpence

Yeah I guess so. Maybe I'll get a date out of at least one of them. What was the thing with the stone you found?

Re: My first Coppas! LC's and a Farthing or Halfpence

Brian... Great job finding your 1st and 2nd LC's + your bonus oldie. Hopefully the dates will come through with a little cleaning. I've still got my eye on my first LC or Colonial Copper.
Clean 'em up and post the pics.

Re: My first Coppas! LC's and a Farthing or Halfpence

OK...I went back and found my old post...

http://forum.treasurenet.com/index.php/topic,118603.0.html

So it looks like it's a leather decoration...but there have been no pics posted for a positive ID.

I'm going with "saddle shield." The only problem with that is that every saddle shield I've seen was riveted to the leather--rather than having the hooks on the back. At least the CW-Era ones were... So I don't know if pieces like this have been positively ID'ed on here yet...

Re: My first Coppas! LC's and a Farthing or Halfpence

I'm going to take a shot in the what is it category.

Re: My first Coppas! LC's and a Farthing or Halfpence

Congrats on the Large Coppers!

I recommend soaking them in a hot peroxide bath (see the post "Cleaning Large Cents" Here: http://forum.treasurenet.com/index.php/topic,39135.new.html)

I bet you are able to get dates and ID's on the coppers.

Good Luck and Congratulations!

Re: My first Coppas! LC's and a Farthing or Halfpence

not sure yet, pretty sure the stone is fake. We have got to get Aaron into the large copper!

Re: My first Coppas! LC, King George II Halfpence and a Draped Bust LC "Updated"

Well I thought what the heck and started peroxide treatment (hours). The three coppers where.

Classic Head Large Cent - 18??

Draped Bust Large Cent - 17??

King George II Halfpenny - 1749 - 1753

Did not expect that! Thought they were all 1800's. Needless to say, I'm happy ;D

Great finds Brian!!! Congrats on the OLD coins. Way to go.
I have 2 or 3 of those shield decorations too. Not saying they are CW related, but I found mine in CW areas.

Re: My first Coppas! LC, King George II Halfpence and a Draped Bust LC "Updated"

Great finds, and congrats on your first coppers. The shield is a decoration on horse bridles. I have found several of them up here in Vermont (Not too many CV battles up this way, but from that era) Congrats...Lance

Re: My first Coppas! LC, King George II Halfpence and a Draped Bust LC "Updated"

the shield is a rosett from a horse's bridal.its colonial, very nice.i have found a couple here in south jersey.

Re: My first Coppas! LC, King George II Halfpence and a Draped Bust LC "Updated"

Awesome finds on the coppers. I see that George is facing to the left. That would most likely make it a George ll copper 1721-ish to 1756-ish and Britania is on the reverse as I can see in your picture. You made some really nice finds there congrats.

Re: My first Coppas! LC, King George II Halfpence and a Draped Bust LC "Updated"

Thats freakin amazing!!!!! I can't even imagine the cins that we would come up with if we hunted the rest of the property! Awesome finds bud!
