My First Cellar Hole Finds...

I walked to the end of my street today with my son to hunt a few cellar holes that are there. It was the first time I ever really tried to hunt a cellar hole. I've done a couple before I guess but I never really concentrated on one for any real length of time and I never really found anything worth while. Today was no exception but I did manage to find something. My son was first on the board with the ax head. While I was on the outskirts of the hole, I got a good 82 on my AT Pro. Normally a penny or dime signal but it is also what my colonial coppers have been coming up as. I dug down about 4 inches and out came the lantern section. My son also found the old family cemetery. Most likely the owners of the property at the time. I would have to say that this location dates to the 19th century. I'll have to go back again and spend more than the 2 hours that we were there for today.

Nice finds. That ax head looks like a good candidate for restoration.

Thanks... I know just where to use it too! Too bad there was no markings on the lantern section but I'm beginning to like these relics now. I know this site must have more things to find too because I found 2 colonial coppers in a field very close to the cellar hole earlier this year.

Thanks for the tip but unfortunately there is no markings at all. I'll have to look online for something similar from around that time period.

Thanks everyone! I'll be back there again soon. I have a new spot to hit first though.

With brass targets as big as that lantern piece, there has got to be some good finds :icon_thumleft:

Is there alot of iron around the cellar?

Yes JB. There are three cellar holes to hit and they all have iron. You should make a trek down to this end of the state sometime. I could use your expertise.
