We were out visiting and delivering Christmas gifts today and then had dinner planned at my in-laws, so I thought a beautiful 45 degree day was gonna go to waste as far as detecting goes. My wife then made a statement that put a smile on my face...she said she wanted to get the kids down for a nap for a couple of hours and that she was gonna lie down with them. I immediately changed out of my good clothes and put work clothes on and went to an 1800's house I;ve been hitting off and on. Today I went to the fields out behind the house where I've found a barber quarter before. This is a low lying area so was still wet and muddy from yesterdays rain and I almost went elsewhere, but where I only had an hour and a half to go I stuck it out, glad I did. Was going over a center drainage area and right over the middle of a puddle I got a solid compact half dollar signal, I thought it may be a piece of pipe, starting digging and of course the ice cold water and mud slogged back into my hole as fast as I could dig. My hands were frozen but I starting scooping out handfuls of mud as fast as I could and kept scanning over my dirt pile, till I got a hit there...sloshed the mud around and caught a glimpse of silver and picked up a nice 1901 Barber Half..my first. Spent another hour there and found an Indian Head, unreadable date, and also an old cloak weight. Time disappeared fast and had to get back to family priorities, but hopefully will be able to hit the field again before spring.
