So these are my first three days of metal detecting and I got about an hour in each day.
Not the best finds bunch of clad and torn up pennies lol wonder why it's doing that to them?
And some other junk i'm not sure what they are for.
I've noticed with my ace 250 that I will get a good signal for something like a dime for example but when I dig there's nothing there! I've found a lot of aluminum and I think that it might be little pieces that I'm missing but it's driving me nuts! DSCN1354.JPG

If the pennies are 83 and newer the zinc rots away fast underground,I have found many like this.

WELCOME TO T-NET! :occasion18: :hello: :icon_thumleft:

All modern zinc cents will corrode badly in nearly any kind of soil. Someone who also uses the ace 250 will probably weigh in soon about how to screen out the tiny aluminum. I usually screen it out when beach hunting as lots of tiny foil bits on beaches. Even so, I sometimes get "foiled again!"
:BangHead: If your machine didn't come with pin-pointer capability, you'll save a lot of time if you buy a pin-pointer -- either the high-quality brands that lots of t-net folks swear by, or else the cheap version that I bought online from Harbor Freight for under $25. That Harbor Freight pin-pointer has done well for three years, though early on we had to replace the switch by buying a new part for $5 locally. HAVE FUN! YOU'LL DIG MANY GROOVY SURPRISES! Andi

If you are getting dime signals, there's something there. Keep in mind, most dimes, quarters, and nickels you dig are NOT going to be shiny. They tend to blend in with the soil. You'll get it tho.

It does take a bit of time. A separate pin pointer will help. Remember that it's possible to move a dime so it's up on edge. Making it harder to find. Move the dirt around a bit, check the digger to see if it's stuck to that and work on pinpointing so you know where it's supposed to be.

Practice at home until you get a good feel for the machine.

the only coins that do not blend in with the soil is Gold. I have not found any yet. But have jewelry, silver I have been finding has been shiny or it has toned badly. HH and welcome to TNET

What I do when I've had those encounters.....I generally only hunt in the all metal mode. I discriminate foil and iron. Deep iron will ring up in the dollar range. When I have had a signal and then after I dig the plug, it seems to have lost the signal.....I undo the iron and foil discrimination and check the plug and hole again. Usually it is very small aluminum or foil in the plug. No discrimination at this point locates the small items usually in the plug. Once you learn the Ace 250 you will find your hunts more productive and less frustrating. Aluminum and foil can not be avoided.....best policy is to dig all good signals. Saturday I was hunting a soccer field and got a signal in the foil range just below nickel. It turned out to be a gold ring. The more you dig in the beginning the more you will learn what the machine is telling you. Happy hunting............!

Welcome to the net. You may want to consider purchasing a pinpointer. I use a Garret pin pointer. It has really helped me find those ghost targets and I don't damage as many targets.

I use the Ace 250 and yes the signal does disappear sometimes when you dig but spread out the soil that you have dug and generally the signal will come back.

You need to get a pin pointer it really does help and as G-olden years said you can get one at harbor freight I have one of those and it does help the only problem with there pin pointer is they have problems but just keep your receipt and return to get another until you get a good one.

Got a pin pointer? If not get one, makes chaise'n those tiny almost ghost pieces around a lot easier To find! Nice finds for your first 3 times out! Congrats! When you find your first silver and gold we want to see your happy dance too! I will be getting a Garrett's soon my old pin pointer has had it! HH!

Thanks for the advice! This will definitely save me time! Wow, what a day that had to have been a gold ring.. I am about to make another post on the finds section.. I went to a Civil war fort park today and I found a few things. Not much because I got rained out after 40min but wow I can't wait to go back :)

Thanks for the advice everyone! I am definitely going to invest in a pin pointer.. as I can see it's going to save me a ton of time! And a lesche would be good too. I am using a transplanter right now.. it tore my hand up pretty good today.. I see what digging gloves are for. Bought me a pair of nice Black and decker rubber grip gloves wow they work amazing!

Welcome Damian77, I too live in Knoxville! Welcome aboard!:hello:

Hunt with a pointer.. Faster u get the target the faster u get to the next target = better finds...it part a numbers game and location game...but I've found cool stuff even when I didn't have high hopes for the location welcome to the addiction!!
