If you would have told me two years ago when I started detecting that I’d find a coin from the 1600s in the dirt beneath my feet- I wouldn’t believe it. At a farm permission in Southern NJ today, after pulling about 3 pounds of cans and nothing else to speak of- the Nox let loose with a quiet but consistent mid tone. Cut wide and deep and found what I thought was my first 2 cent piece. After a few rubs, I saw a crown- and numbers on either side of the crown. ..I had to read it 10 times to believe it. 1693. 16-93. My oldest coin by 56 years. An Irish William and Mary half penny. Not the best of shape but part of their hair line, harp, crown and DATE are clear!! I’m in awe of what history is beneath our feet. 575D2FEE-0E4B-4E3E-8BF5-324ED77B970C.jpeg5E4CF9A8-0507-444C-9A5E-EFA99DC6314B.jpeg. Congrats on your first 1600s coin. They are out there believe it or not. My oldest is 1661 found in SW PA (believe it or not). Post some cleaned up pics when you can.

Congratulations on your first 1600's coin! I too became a member of this exclusive club earlier this year. You won't forget this day!

Incredible! You joined a very small club as most of us will never see one of those:icon_thumleft:

Thats way nicer than any of my toasted 1600s coppers. Congrats

Congratulations! Hey, that's in pretty darn good shape. Now you have to top that.

Wow, Congratulations! :headbang::hello2::icon_thumright:

I'd be quite happy with that condition :thumbsup:

Awesome find! It's difficult finding pre1700s colonial, that's a marvel. :occasion14:

Incredible find- Congrats Ed!

I’m amazed doing research on this now! What a story of the Irish coinage! Only minted for 3 years!

That's an awesome coin, congrats!

Wow is all I can say...

Congratulations on a great find. I goes to show that persistence and hard work pay off. After digging all that junk you got your reward. Not in bad shape for a coin over 300 years old. Hopefully one day I can join the 1600s club too. Keep swingin.
