Agreed!

Hopefully the reason why government feels the need to impose rules isn't related to a lack of personal responsibilty and integrity on the part of the metal detecting community. There are plenty of activitsts out there who'll scream for and demand "regulation" without folks who share our hobby acting to fuel the fire.

I agree but I think my keeper ratio is a little better then your 1 in 100.

I've only been detecting for a few years. The first year I focused on learning my machine and proper techniques. Then I started focusing on my research skills then networking. Now I'm at a point that I think I know our hobby pretty well and I truly enjoy getting others into it and just trying to educate people about what we do. In the past I was unsure of myself and my skills so I always sat back and hoped others would fight for the hobby but now I know everyone needs to voice up when our rights are in jeopardy. This may be when local, state or federal government try to further limit where we can detect. Don't think that if it does not affect you locally that you should not worry about it.

It also includes speaking up when you see one of our own doing something wrong. That may include detecting where they should not be (we may want to fight to open areas up to us but if there are not yet available stay out...it will only cause more areas to be closed). The basic one of fill in your holes even if it is in the woods, at the beach or in a farm field. If you don't that is a sure way of getting more places closed. Donate some of your finds to a local museum, historical society or other organization that benefits the general public. Get involved within your local community so if something does threaten our hobby you have an already built in support group.
