I have been hunting for a couple decades now and I have used many different types of recovery tools. some good and some not so good. I started tinkering with different designs. I try to keep them simple and strong. and practical for most conditions. this latest design I believe fits the bill. The highest stress point is where the shaft meets the blade. You will notice that the shaft passes thru the foot step and is welded to the blade this is because most often a failure will occur at a weld at a foulkrum point. Look close at the picture looking down the shaft to the blade you will see inside the square tubing there is a a strap. this is 304-2B stainless steel which extends 9 in. up the shaft adding a tremendous amount of strength at the highest stress point. plus note the tube is at a 30 deg. angle to the blade this is also for strength. the overall length is 42.5 in. the T handle is 4in. the blade is 11.5 in. and at the widest point is 3.5 in. The foot step is 4.75 in. X 2in. which makes this really nice and stable while digging. All TIG welded with 4130 rod. my welds may not all be pretty but they are strong and deep. the blade is heat treated. This digger weighs 3lbs. 9 oz.
