believe it or not - there were tons - at least in my area (ma & Ct) we had like 20 dealers within an hours drive - there were no water hunters back then until early 80s when alot of us started to float our land machines - i got a better Compass - a 77 which had a few more knobs and got a large coil for it and then floated my 94B
my first Compass machine was used for $99... they didnt go for much more new
back then i was in a local club that had over 300 members and not to far away there was another club that had like 100+ and around an hour drive away there were a couple more - back then would go for a ride on a weekend and see guys at schools and parks all over

Your hair looks like mine in avatar.

So, I'd have to go back to 1970 and be a stupid teenager again, ignorant of all the great places I SHOULD have detected, but, didn't? Naw, if I couldn't benefit from what I know now, I wouldn't want to go back and do the same stuff over again. What would be the point? I can still remember what I did. Now, if I could go back with what I know NOW? Absolutely!! I would have started detecting at least 10 year earlier!

Wow, I never found a coin already in a 2" x 2" folder! Ha Ha Ha.
Actually, I did find a cent last year that was in a plastic sleeve...very strange.
I started MDing in the early 1970s and bought my first White's detector with the proceeds from selling a 20 dollar US gold piece for $37.50. I originally bought the coin from a candy store owner who got it in change in the 1960s. I think I paid $25 for it at the time.
Don't remember how much the detector cost.

I started very young also, my mother bought an old whites the one with the blue case and hunted all over the place with it but my mother was the one that got me started, now my back and knees are all done and have not been in three years, but still got my Excalibur 1000.
