My Chinese Fortune cookie was right!! Old Gold inside: UPDATE on Stone...

10/07: Got the stone tested, but unfortunately it's not moissanite and it's not a diamond. It's probably just glass, but it was worth a shot to check out. HH all!

Yesterday's fortune cookie read: "Old friends, old wine, and old gold are best"...

Fast forward to today. An old buddy of mine is here to visit, and went out detecting in hopes of some good finds.

The first, older place was a bust, but did manage two buttons, one a tombac with a design. Still need to clean. After that went back to the same place as last week that yielded some silver. Within 5 minutes a ring came out! It was about 5 inches down and was gold in color. Thought it could be gold, but packed it up until after the trip so it could be cleaned. As expected, finds weren't as abundant as last week, but still managed...

1943-S Wartime Nickel
1944-P Wartime Nickel
1949 Roosie
Some more Wheat cents but haven't gotten to cleaning them yet
Buffalo nickel - haven't checked it yet
Indian Head Cent - haven't checked it yet either
older junk ring

Got the ring home and cleaned it off... there's a stamp inside with an anchor followed by a "K". Actually found a ring last year with the same stamp. This is what was said last year...""an anchor tipped to the right and the letter K" used by Ripley-Howland Mfg Co. on 10K Gold Rings, Manufacturing Jewelers, Boston, MA, and New York, NY, USA - ca 1887 - 1912." So, looks to be old gold!! The Chinese Fortune cookie was right!!! Not sure of the stone, it's clear but has scratches so I'm doubtful it's a diamond. Will get it checked though just to be sure.

HH all!

nice finds congrats HH

ah that's what I am not doing right ... off to get me some fortune cookies :laughing7: Very nice finds! HH

Need me a bag full of those cookies. Congrats on a killer ring.:icon_thumleft:

Nice looking old ring! Be really neat if you got a mine cut stone there, shape and era is right. easy ID, flat on bottom rather than pointed.
I think you saw the ring I dug from the 'shoemakers', remarkably similar design, though mine is unmarked
Held a stone of the same shape. would be 2-3 carats, still got a 5 gallon bucket of dirt from site hoping the stone is there, broken prongs are a good sign.
Please update us on your findings , your friend, Herbie.

testing 123, diamond rings do scratch up. and they even chip on the sides. Check that ring out!

nice job would love to turn up some finds like that. Been long long time for me. Keep it coming

Thanks everyone, looks like we should all eat more Chinese food!

Hey Herbie!! I actually thought of your ring after cleaning this one up. Yours might have more gold, but they do look pretty similar. Yours might also be a bit older as there is no stamp. Hopefully you can find the stone as that's a nice ring. A couple of the prong tips are broken on this one, so it was just a matter of time before this stone came free. Seems pretty sturdy though. I'll have the jeweler check it out tomorrow and will let everyone know what they say. I'm thinking 5% chance it's a diamond, but you never know!

Nice! Congrats on the Gold Ring! :icon_thumright:
