Well this story actually goes back to 2001 when the wife and bought a old 20 acre homestead in Elo . Many of my fellow Michiganders may not know where this is but it's located in the Copper Country. We were going to build there and retire. Beautiful piece with lots of apple trees propagated by the large local deer population, bear, grouse, turkey wolves, you name it we had it.
Anyway the place was a mess. It had been used for a deer camp for about 3 years previously. All the original clothes and furniture from the past owners was still in it. Including a beautiful Gustav Stickley Rocker. It was originally a log homestead and had cedar shakes put over it. We found many pictures including the original deed from 1903 when they paid a mere 3.09 for the whole shabang.
I had pulled the trailer outside underneath the up stair window and proceeded to heave all the trash, clothes, boxes, shoes, boots etc. into the trailer to haul to the burn pile.
Well, I went over to the bed which had 3 old horse hair matresses on it and yanked the quilt off and pitched it out the window. I turned back toward the bed and saw an envelope laying there with, ya you guessed it greenbacks sticking out of it. Of course my eyes liked to pop out of my head. I picked it up and had a grand total of 2744.00 in it. Some of the bills were silver certificate from the 50's. The original owners were all dead with no relatives and couldn't believe the hunter who owned it before me had not at least done a bit of looking around. We ended up selling the place and moving down Nisula way. Found home that was only 25 yrs. old with a bit of acreage and able to expand property wise if we want to. Well there you have it. Guess you could put this under believe it or not but it did happen. You know you hear about these things but never think it can or would happen to you.
