I had a little bit of swing time after work yesterday, and thought about going to the park to look for some gold, but decided I was tired and would just stick around the farm, so i could quit whenever I felt like it.

I started up by the house in a place I call "pulltab city" for reasons that should be obvious. Getting tired of that, I said a quick prayer to be lead in the direction of something really cool. I meandered around the property for about an hour before ending up in the back of the property behind the main barn. So far, nothing to show for it but a zincoln and some exercise. And then it happened...

Got a hit, dug a plug, flipped it over. PP'ed it inside the plug. Broke it apart, and had trouble finding the little tiny disc inside. I hadn't ever seen a coin that small, but I knew it was old and man-made, so I proceeded with caution. I carefully brushed away some of the north carolina red clay to reveal a shield, a star, and a date. I knew what it was then, only because I'd seen one or two others posted on forums.

1853 three-cent.
:o

I ran around the farm showing anyone who would look! My oldest coin before this was 1930's. To think how long this has been sitting there, untouched since the person who lost it 150 years ago! It's made even cooler since it was from my farm, which I've done extensive historical research on. So I even have a pretty good idea of who might have owned it. I still can't believe I found it!

I went back to the same spot tonight, hoping I could find another oldie. I only had about 15 minutes after work before dark, but at the end of it got a great "dig me" signal. Turned out to be this 1940 merc, my 5th silver coin but my 1st merc. My wife came up just in time to see me recover it, too, which was fun. So two hunts, two silver coins. Not shabby at all.

Excellent 3 cent piece! I have never seen one before, thanks for sharing it!

Sweet silver 3-Center! :headbang: :headbang:

At around 1/3 the weight of a silver Dime and about 80% of the diameter those are a tough find.

Congrats.

Great find! Gtoast!! You think you could put a scan up of both the dime and the 3 cent'er together for giggles!
I have never seen one myself, except for the red book thanks for giving us an idea of the scale. "Diggin"

That is awesome! I would love to find a three cent piece, but it may never happen around here.

Congrats on some good finds! I hope to find a three center some day.

Thanks ya'll! I suppose I did forget to give a sense of scale. I had heard "wow, I can't believe how small these are!" but until you see one, you don't get just how small they really are. I thought it was maybe a button or something until I saw the design/date. What really gets me isn't just the diameter, smaller than a dime, but how incredibly thin it is.
Anyways, thanks for the kind words. I'm super happy with my latest finds, it'll be a while before I top this!

Congrats on the 3-center :headbang: Sweet coin :icon_thumright:

Awesome Silver!
I love the Trimes, their small size seems to have lead to them being frequently lost.
The detail in the shield is Great

Wow.....32 years and 3499 silver coins and I have no 3 center!. How cool, great story...your dime is an "S" too....good job. Thats whats so great about this hobby...as long as you dig all your targets something wonderful will happen sooner or later! Burl

Awesome 3 Center!!! A rarity anywhere, I wish I had oldies like that at my house lol. I found 2 of them this year but not in that good of shape for sure.

GREAT FINDS... I would be hunting that area every night after work and weekends ;D

wtg - i have one of those. didn't even know it was a coin until I put it under a magnifying glass. Your detail is way better than mine is. they are super small and thin. great job

WOW I want one.........

Great find, those little suckers are hard to find.I have only found one in 30 years and it was worn out. Congrats!

Thanks so much! From some of your comments, I guess it's in better shape than I'd thought, it looked pretty rough to my untrained eyes. I agree that the shield has nice detail, but it's pretty worn around the edges of the design, and slightly bent. And it's really dark, I guess my ground isn't great for keeping silver pretty.

Anyways, thanks again for the comments, everybody! You're right, I doubt I'll top this for quite some time!!

@Burl, I hadn't even noticed the mint mark on my merc, thanks for pointing it out. It's a long way from home, lol!
