Every time I think I am starting to understand this hobby, I find out I have a long wait to go. I always thought that the condition of a dug copper coin was closely related to the type of soil it was found in. Certainly there is more to it than just that. These two indian heads were found in the same soil, only two feet apart. Both presumably have been in the ground about a 110 years. The 1901 has exceptional surfaces, the nicest condition I have ever dug. The 1881 is porous, dull, and covered with green warts. Go figure.
Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

The 1901 looks like it was dropped when new and possibly the mint oils were still present and help to preserve it. The other might have had any numerous trace corrosive oils or soaps covering it when it was dropped.

That 01 is darn near perfect. :icon_thumleft:

Very nice 1901 indian. Looks like it was purchased not dug!

Now that's two extremes for sure!

i know the answer one is a old dirty man other is a clean collage gent

Great find on the 0'1! It's incredible.

All the best,

Lanny

I've mentioned microclimates a few times...
dug a beautiful 1802 cent a foot away from a blistered IH :dontknow:
Lovely '01

Couldn't agree with you more. It looked great from the minute it came out of the ground. I only used soapy water and a toothpick to clean it. The shine you see in the pictures is just from the oil from my fingertips.

That 1881 looks like every Indian I pull from the ground here. Wish I could find one in as good condition as your 1901. I'd be very happy with that. Nice digs.
