I guess I could bury it.
Powers up, but it won't read any signals in any mode. I don't think it is a short, I don't know what the deal is. It's the hottest right now that it has been in weeks, and my ace is broke.
I tried resetting it to factory settings, took out the batteries and tried looking for a short in the wire from the coil to the head, but still won't beep for s**t.

I wrote garrett, but I'm wanting to get out tomorrow morning. Anybody ever had this problem?

Re: My Ace is dead. ANybody know how to fix it?

Did you put new batteries in it?
Is it under warranty?
You could always try a hammer (just kidding).
Did you buy it used?
Bill..

Re: My Ace is dead. ANybody know how to fix it?

I guess it could be the batteries. The battery meter reads full, but they are just some batteries I had in a drawer. That seems pretty likely, now that you mention it. I did buy it used. I got a refurbished one from Texas Premium. It is still under warranty.
I'll buy some new batteries first chance I get.
I know where this old bottle dump is, and the guy who owns the land didn't want me going out there until deer season was over with. I just got the okay from him to go out there, so I've got that I can do if the old ace won't cooperate.

Re: My Ace is dead. ANybody know how to fix it?

Try disconnecting, then reconnecting the search coil....maybe there was a poor contact.

Re: My Ace is dead. ANybody know how to fix it?

Do you see the blocks lite up on the screen when you pass a target by the coil? If so maybe your speaker went bad? Did you try headphones?

Re: My Ace is dead. ANybody know how to fix it?

My guess is if the screen lights up but it won't beep you may have one bad battery in the bunch. Also check if they are installed correctly. I've done this installing one wrong myself. Check if it is just the speaker or headphones as was mentioned too. Reconnect the search coil and check the pins. If all else fails you can send it off to Garrett.

Once during the dive season when my detector died I ended up buying a second one for a backup. Then a backup for the backup and we were off to having many toys. :D

Re: My Ace is dead. ANybody know how to fix it?

Use only alkaline batteries, and NEVER mix them (this means alkalines, lithium, acid core, etc) with other types of batteries. The odd birds can turn on each other and wreck more than just each other, they can also hurt your circuitry.

Re: My Ace is dead. ANybody know how to fix it?

Sorry to hear about your Ace. I have really enjoyed mine. I would return it for repairs if the warranty is still in effect. I had to return my hunting partners GTI 2500 last year. Garrett covered the warranty and had the detector back in less than 2 weeks. Give them a call and describe the problems your having. The Ace is too good a detector to just scrap it.

Re: My Ace is dead. ANybody know how to fix it?

I was overcome with joy to hear that garrett is even going to send ups to pick it up. all i have to do is box it up and leave it for the ups lady.

Re: My Ace is dead. ANybody know how to fix it?

I think it has been just under 2 weeks since UPS showed up to pick up my metal detector. I got it back today. It looks like a brand new one!! The shaft and head unit are the same, but I think all of the hardware is brand new. They sent a brand new coil, a environmental cover, a tote bag, and some sweet Garrett head phones. I
can't wait to go try it out tomorrow.
It didn't cost me any thing, and they sent a new coil along with some cool freebies. So if anybody from Garrett reads this, thanks very much!!

Freebies plus a new coil.

I'm glad to hear you Ace is back and ready to go. I can't believe the free goodies they sent you! That is great. It just shows what a good company they are and their generosity is amazing. I hope it lasts a long time without any other problems.

Garrett Customer service is TOPS! They really back up their products.... :icon_sunny:

That is excellent service. I love my Garrett machines and feel good to know that they back their merchandise.

I wish some of the other companies would offer the same friendly excellent customer service.

Good luck I hope you find some goodies to post on your next hunt out.

I also had to send my 250 for repairs. Garrett is the best, no question. Recalibrated the control box and replaced the coil. All in less than two weeks, cross country. Highly recommend their products, for everyone.

Garret is number 1 for service and back up ,looked after me when i was 1800 miles from home ,sent me a new coil. free no charge ,and were happy to do it ,and keep happy , they just love to use UPS

yes I have the same problem....Acer 250 glitz ........seams the detector will work fine for a short while and then nothing will register.....the unit goes dead, but the face still stays lit...I can flip through all functions....its like all keys are disabled with the exception for the power on /off button..I turn it off then turn it on I get 2 beeps.....the face lights up...but the depth indicator has no bars indicating.....I can turn on and off, change batteries turn on.....still the same nothing....when I unplug the cable from the head while the unit is on....it tends to reset it self and will work fine.....for a while.....then silent......nothing at all......turn off....then turn on beep beep .....total silents....unplug the head cable and plug it in and it will work for a while .......it seams like a redundant cycle......I have checked all connections....nothing is loose......good batteries......I emailed a note to GARRETT last week explaining the problem and never got a response back.....I was wondering if this has happened to any body else who owns a Garrett ACER 250.....any suggestions?? I have had the unit for 9 months and am very disappointed in the lack of service response and functionality of the unit......sent 2 email to Garrett before I got a response, here is what they said... " I have never heard of this......oh well here is a copy of their response
"Good morning Dan,

I’m sorry for no one getting back to you on your email last week. I would recommend that you send in your ACE 250 so we can fixed it. There won’t be any charge for repair, I have never heard of the problem you are having. Here is a form that you can fill out and put inside the box with your detector when you are sending the unit back to us. http://garrett.com/hobby/hbby_factory_service_request_form.htm Please let me know if there is any questions or concerns and again I’m sorry if no one got back to you last week in regards to your email.

Thank you,

Hold that bus!!!!!! Yes, Garrett HAS heard of this problem. See that name at the end of that email response you just posted? "Brad Keel"? I told him last week that my new Ace 250 coil would not respond to anything. It powers up fine, but will not "ding" when I swipe a quarter against the coil. He sent me a new coil within 2 days and everything works like new again.

On another note, a friend of mine just got him an Ace 250. I noticed every time you 'bump' the shaft, the unit would "ding! ding!" He called Garrett, and they told him "it's a bad coil". They sent him a new one, and now it works perfectly.

Ha! "Never heard of this problem" - yea right.

And... you don't have to send in your machine. Just call them and demand a new stock coil be mailed to you. :icon_sunny:
