Hey everyone:

I borrowed a "White's Surf P. I. Pro" and took it for a test spin today.......talk about a horse of a different color.......it has a different feel, look and was a real eye opening experience......no pinpointing switch......no depth meter and not at all easy to dig (scoop) with the waves rolling in on you. You don't have a clear view of your hole and with each wave, new sediment gets dumped in the hole you've already started.........what a challenge and what fun...... I highly recommend everyone give it a try, especially on those days when the mercury is topping out in the high 90's........a great way to stay cool and still enjoy the hobby. Anyways here are the finds from my first ever water hunt.....Hope you enjoy.

Psgen

PS: If it weren't for the lone Cent in the bottom of the picture. I would have been shut out......;D but boy did I have a good time anyways.

Re: 1st Water Hunt

Ive done it a few times, and know folks who only go to lakes due to the waves, but the best treasure is likley in the ocean, but it is tough.

Re: 1st Water Hunt

I see many good days in the water for you. Summer is water detecting time. Once you start finding those nice gold rings and bracelets, it will be hard to get you back on land again.

I finally got my partner in the water last week. Although we were hunting a lake, the water was still kind of rough. He had trouble pinpointing also. Hey everyone has trouble, even us old guys who have been water hunting for years. But we all started somewhere.

Sometime try putting your foot next to the coil and then put your scoop next to your foot and dig from the side. I use a $125 scoop with a wooden handle that is over 5 feet long. I also use dive boots while detecting. In the sand around where I live, sometimes it is hard to dig and you have to sort of kick the scoop, with a bare foot that could be dangerous.

Also, for some reason, boaters don't have trash cans on there boats. They throw everything overboard. Everyone who is the water, swimmers or guys detecting should have some sort of water shoe or dive boot on. Broken bottles and pull tabs do a number on your feet.

Thanks again for your post, Good Luck in your future water hunts.

P.S. So far this year i've only been in the water 3 times and have found a man's 10K wedding band and a ladies gold ring and one Sterling Silver ring, also a toe ring and some change. My parter has been in the water almost everyday for a month and has found over 30 rings. Not to bad for Lake hunting!

Re: 1st Water Hunt

I'd love to try it. My White's M6 can't be totally submerged but I can get about knee deep as long as I don't get the box and display wet. I'm going to get covers for them if possible and give it a shot in the not too distant future. Right now I don't have a long handled scoop & I think they are asking way too much for them. When I see $150 I think to myself, "What, are they f*%#@4 nuts?" Glad you enjoyed yourself.

Re: 1st Water Hunt

I'm glad you enjoyed it. When I started water detecting in the 70s, I used my 77 b compass md. I took off the box and put it in a small inflatable boat, installed a weighted coil, modified the stem with hand grip and arm holder, got a scoop and was ready to go. Now I use a fisher m-scope (aquanut) 1280x that works well. HH

Re: 1st Water Hunt

Welcome to the wonderful world of water hunting. I started in Lake Erie and have moved up from the Atlantic to the Pacific now, 2500 miles from the nearest mainland, and when those waves hit you, you know it. But I wouldn't trade it for anything. Good luck, the treasures will follow with patience and persistance.

Re: 1st Water Hunt

Neat! I told Charlie just the other day that I thought I might want a water detector. I love to snorkel and think the two put together might be fun! :)

Good luck on your next trip out! Nana :)

Re: 1st Water Hunt

:D I'm going to Maine this week for a week long vacation.......The house we've rented is right on the beach.... I have the use of the detector (Surf P.I. Pro) for as long as I need or until I buy one for myself ;D I'll post my results, if any, upon my return........

4th of July week should be plenty of good hunting ;D

Hi Psgen!

I bought a Tesoro Tiger Shark last year and have detected in lakes only 3 times so far. It is a lot of fun and relaxing. People give me strange looks but don't bother me since they don't want to get their feet wet. :D I managed to get about $3-4 each time and one junk ring. I did scoop up a scuba diver once! :o It was a plastic kid's toy!

welcome to another terrific aspect of detecting, like the others said give it time and you will be hooked too. you have a good time in maine and post some pics
