The button is smaller than a dime, as you can see in the picture. I found this at the bottom of a dam on the side of a hill next to a tree trunk where a 1 X 1 area of sand has been deposited during floods.

CW era gen service button is what looks like to me
 

Looks like a Great Seal button, post-CW, perhaps ca WW I but then again I'm no expert on these buttons.
 

I agree with Eric. Great Seal likely an early one.
Always a Cool find IMO.
 

From what I have seen posted on T.N. it appears to be a Great Seal button world war 1.
 

Yes that is a Great Seal Button with a LOT OF environmental damage. The Great Seal style was introduced in 1902. Most are from either WWI or WWII.
 

I agree that Steve in PA nailed it; Great Seal button, 1902 onwards. The soil really did a number on this one, but you will find much better ones soon. Keep it up.
