MXT

Your MXT is a very good universal machine, it can find just about everything from small gold nuggets to coins at an average park hunt. Once you get comfortable with using it and knowing where you will be detecting, you might consider a few of the nice coils they offer for the MXT. HH, Mike

Day,

sounds like your off to a good start.

Learn that machine.

Always helps to do some research on older spots, but sometimes you just trip across a good one.

Best of luck on your future hunts.

Congratulations on your purchase, you have made a wise choice i have my MXT now for 2 years and have found some great finds with it,best being a gold half sovereign.
I have found the relic mode the best with the trigger forward for all coins jewelry and relics, i'm sure you will find some good gear with it. Cheers Raoul ;)

Tell me more about why you like using relic mode with the tirgger forward better. I have an MXT and am curious

Hello skane. I'll jump in here and give you a quick answer to why I use relic mode on my MXT. Here's the setup I use most of the time. Relic mode, trigger forward, disc set at 0. And usually have the ground track set to lock. Relic mode gives you two tones. High tones for targets that fall above where you have your disc set and low tones for targets below your disc setting. A third medium tone, like you hear in C&J mode, indicates a target that the detector isn't sure about. Usually a deep target.
Trigger forward suppresses the audio below the disc setting. Disc set at 0 gives you a low tone for all ferrous targets and a high tone for all nonferrous targets. This is a great setting for seperating trash from treasures that are very close to each other. In a very trashy area I'll set disc at just under 3 so I don't have to hear all trash targets. Disc set at 0 gives you the best depth too.
The worst thing you can do is set your detector to all the preset marks and never try different set up variations. Metal detectors are made to play around with. Johns favorite set up he uses in Maine will be different than Toms setup in New Mexico. Have fun and happy hunting.
Aren't you glad I didn't give you the long answer. ;D

I ran mine in relic mode for the widest variety of finds inc. nickels,

HH and keep us posted,

Good Choice, Sounds like your on your way already. Don't get discouraged. Every detectorist needs to start out clad hunting for awhile to get used the the numbers pinpointing and sound of a new unit. That's a deep machine and you'll do good with it.

Hey guys, dumb question. How do I put a avicon(picture) next to my post like lone wolf and the others? I would like to have a picture of me by my posts. Would appreciate any help. I think it is called avicon but I am probably wrong. Thanks , buffaloearl

Thanks for the response. Well I have really been using it in c/J mode and tracking set to Ground.(basically all I hunt now are dry sand playgrounds. When they sold me the MD they said basically that C/J mode and Relic mode are about the same (booklet that came with it seemed to allude to that also). Anyway, I usually have disc set to 1, and dig everything 9cuz diggins easy in dry sand). However, I am starting to get sick of digging nails, but sometimes I find that if there is a coin deep in the sand, I might get a faint signal that at first will indicate a ferrous target until I kick more sand out of the way and then I'll get a more positivie VDI which I'll always dig.
Is there any dpeth differences to using Relic mode vs. c/J mode? When should I use one vs the other?

Skane: As far as depth is concerned it seems like the answer is depends on who you talk to. I think that the real answer is it depends on the situation. Ground mineralization, coil being used, how trashy the area, moisture content of the ground, etc. All of this can affect the depth capabilities of a detector.
If you're getting tired of digging nails in a certain spot here's what you do. Take one of those nails, find a clean spot of ground, set the nail down and find the spot on the disc setting where you just start to get a bad audio signal from that nail. But remember if you're in ground track mode and you keep swinging the coil over a target the MXT will cancel out the targets signal. Or learn to listen carefully to the audio signal. That's your best indication of good and bad targets. That's where a good pair of headphones come in handy. So you can really hear what the detector is telling you. Many times there will be only subtle differences but there will be differences. It takes a long time to learn what your detector is telling you. I bought my MXT in February and I'm not even close in knowing everything about this detector. Every site you go to will be a little different. But remember. YOU are the treasure hunter. The metal detector is just a tool. An inanimate object. It can only tell you what it thinks might be under ground. It's up to you to decipher what it's telling you.
Personally I think there are great differences between C&J and relic mode. A lot of people prefer the C&J mode. I happen to like the two tone audio of the relic mode. You'll have to get out there and practise and find out what works best for you. Go to a park and check out a small area in one mode. Dig all reasonably good sounding targets. Then go back over the same area in a different mode. See what happens. Then maybe go back and dig every target no matter what the VDI or audio sounds like. When you're first starting out you need to dig almost everything so you can learn your detector.
Like I said before, take that MXT out there and play with it. Relic mode, C&J mode, trigger forward, trigger centered, set to ground, set to lock, gain set at preset, gain pumped up into the + area. Check your ground phase in prospect mode. If your ground registers in the high 70's and up, a DD coil will help.
Good luck and keep us informed on how you're doing. And don't hesitate to ask questions. There's a lot of knowledgable people here that can probably answer any question you come up with.
Just remember that a metal detector is not an x-ray machine. It will never be 100% accurate. Don't get discouraged. And if you're not digging any trash you're missing good targets. Whew. I'm worn out.

Great information. I'm definitley not using it to it's fullest potential just based on what you said (some of it I didn't even understand), but that's probably cuz I've been more focused on getting out and using it than reading about it (I read the manual once) and I'm sure I'm not using it to the best of its ability. I will agree with you, I am learning a lot about using it. I need to bone up on some of the features that I'm probably not using.

I have a blast with my MXT.As for nickels I have found over a 1000 nickels this year. The generally read a 18-20.If it fluctuates between 18-20 you almost always have a keeper.

peace,bigrig
