I am getting a new MXT all RPO detector after the first of the year. I can come with a 10" DD coli or a Eclipse 950 coil. The dealer I am working with says the 950 coil is better that the 10" DD for general detecting better target ID. Which is better the 950 or the 10" DD ?? All feedback appreciated. Thanks

I'm sure you'll gets lots of responses touting the 10" DD as the best coil ever made. I much prefer the 950 as the better all around coil. Better discrimination especially on bottle caps and the 950 is the winner for Saltwater beach sand detecting.

Astro,

My MXT Pro (before the All Pro came out) came with the 12" coil, which I know is good for depth but I found it to be very heavy after an hour or so of hunting. I traded it for the 10" DD coil which is the same price and is a little lighter, but this coil still leads to some arm weariness after 2-3 hours of hunting. I will use this 10" coil in big open fields for short hunts, but find that my go to coil has become the 950 off of my M6. It is the best for me for all around use and I have found a lot of coins and relics with it on the MXT Pro and on my M6.

Just my 2 cents.

Good luck and HH.

Depends on where you hunt and what you hunt.. 950 good all around coil. 10DD HEAVY did I say it was HEAVY!

The 950 will be better for beaches but the 10"DD coil is better at separating targets and gets better depth, the D2(10"DD coil) makes the MXT like a whole new detector as far as depth goes. I can get dimes at 10" deep no problem with the D2 coil and have had some at a full 12" a couple times, there's a park that's been pounded since the 70's that nobody even detects anymore because the only silver is all 10"+ and I can still pull silver with this coil but with the trash the 950 would miss these targets. Go with the D2 as you will get a lot better deal when buying a detector as that coil is about 250 new. HH

+1 on the 10"DD. I consider it an upgrade, but pinpointing takes a little more time to perform. If I hurry too much, I can be off an inch or two. Nicked a few finds since putting the DD on.

I would get the 9" spider coil if you could then an aftermarket DD coil that will be lighter and outperform the whites DD. In general with a VLF a DD is better in saltwater than a concentric.

I agree with Fletch, I would get the 9" Spider Coil, it works very well. I would steer clear of the 10" DD ( D2) its heavy and an erratic coil. However, if I had to order the MXT and was stuck with either the 950 or D2 I would take the 950 for sure.

It's true about digging bottle caps with the D2 coil, I could use my 950 and pass all those bottle caps up but I'm going to be passing up most 10"+ silver dimes that I was talking about in the above post. This is one reason nobody detects this old park anymore if you don't have a good detector with the right coil then you won't ever come out with silver, yes the D2 does pick up EMI worse than most coils because it's so sensitive and that's also the reason it's such a deep coil. HH

I USE THE DETECH 8X6 SEF . EVEN THOUGH NOT A WHITES COIL , BUT ITS A AWESOME COIL FOR THE MXT SERIES...

I dont use the 950, i had a 10"dd and for me was prone to emi interference, the 6x10 which i like, doesnt get caught on stubble or whatever can scrub the ground with and get decent depth 7"-8" and good ground coverage.

My two coils were the 950 (better around stubble than spider coils) and the 4X6 Shooter coil ( better for around fence lines and poles, between tree roots, searching for nuggets in tight areas < also see's the smaller nuggets) Both using coil covers so I could rub the ground :)

Note: when using bigger heavier coils,,,, Shorten your rod a notch or two. This makes a BIG difference on your shoulder socket and arm muscles :)

I use a SEF 8x6 for general hunting and ghost towning or a 4.5" DD Detech coil for tot lot hunting, only other coil I recommend is the Eclipse 5.3 by Whites for the MXT Pro I believe this 5.3 Eclipse is the best all around coil for the machine, I find that the larger coils have too much coverage for picking out single targets in trashy ground.

What was the deciding factor for choosing the MXT over the SL? I saw your other post, kind of in the same boat , Pi vs Vlf.

You only need two coils for your MXT. The SEF 6x8, this will be your all around tot lots, parks ect. I have reached the 6" mark with little guy. The second coil you will need is the SEF 10x12, for open felids and hunted out parks ect. and in that order. You should contact your dealer and see what he can do for you...sb

I don't think he would be able to do much as not many places have the SEF coils, he probably has those as choices when he buys the MXT. HH

Generally I use the 10" DD. I find that I dig deeper targets with it and it's not too big to hinder my hunting at all.

Around the 15th of Feb. I will be ordering my MXT all PRO. It comes with the 10"DD coil. They do not have it with the 950 coil. They are making me a good deal on the 950 coil. I am also ordering the 6 X 10 DD coil and the Detech 13" coil and the 4 X 6 Sharpshooter coils while I have the funds. So then the fun begins for sure. I was going to get a Fisher F75 LTD LIMITED buit decided to stick with the Whites. Thanks to all for the feedback it is appreciated.
