Mxt learning

I never did read the MXT Edge but I've heard a lot of good reports about it. How much experience do you have metal detecting? When I bought my MXT I had been detecting for quite some time myself and never did get any reading material on it but did get some good tips when I discover the Whites forum. My favorite coil on the MXT is the D2 for the open spots and 4x6DD shooter for the trashy areas. It is a relative easy straight forward detector to use but like any metal detector there is going to be a learning curve.

I've had my mxt pro for about 6 weeks now and its my first detector. I've went out once too twice a week since I've had it. I've got the 300 ltd coil on it, I think it's 12 inch but don't quote me on it. I know it says 300 ltd on the coil but not sure about 12 inch part. But my biggest complaint is its so damn noisy in high trash area I can't even detect its crazy. I also rarely get anything below 6 inch and I've heard this coil is supposed to go deep too. Any suggestions or advice would awesome.

I would recommend a couple of things that should help...

1) Lock your ground balance AFTER you have balanced it. This should cut down on some of the noise as it won't be trying to keep auto balancing(it does continue to track but doesn't make the changes). If you feel you need an updated GB after hunting for a bit, just do a "Ground Grab".
2) Try cutting the gain down a bit.

Good luck.

The only time that I did use the 12" coil on my MXT was during the winter in the snow or out in the wide open where targets were fewer and further between, the last coil that I used regularly on my MXT was the D2 which is a DD coil more suited for the trashier areas plus with this coil you still get super depth with the MXT. My other favorite coil is the 4x6shooter which is also a DD coil and super good in the super trashy areas. Today the only two coils that I use on my V3i are the D2 and the 4x6DD. With them two coils I'm very satisfied at just about anywhere that I hunt. I do miss the 6x10 for the woods but the one that I have only works on my MXT and not my V3i cause it's not correctly nulled for the V3i but maybe one of these days if I have some money to burn I'll get a 6x10 for my V3i ;D That's a great recommendation that fella gave too, I run in locktrack all of the time and then I ground balance every now and then, it sounds like you have the MXT 300 and I don't think they have the ground grab.

I have the mxt pro with the ground grab. I just haven't used it cause I'm afraid I'm screwing myself. So in trashy areas balance and then lock with the occasional GG

Don't worry you're not screwing anything up. That's what it's for.

Yes! But it works not just for trashy areas. The only time I run it in auto anymore is if I feel the ground conditions are changing rapidly. (So hardly ever)

Turn on, settings, GB, lock & hunt!

Here's how the Ground Grab function works.

1) If hunting in the lock position, push the GG button and release. This will update to the current ground conditions.
2) If hunting in Ground or Salt mode the machine will monitor the ground and make changes to the GB. Pushing and holding the GG button will keep the last the GB and allow you to check weak signals w/o making a change to the GB. The reason for this is sometimes a weaker signal can be mistaken for ground mineralization and thus canceled out. Holding down the GG button will prevent this.
