MXT and signal strength for gold coins

I've had an MXT for a year and a half now, LOVE it, have found WL 1/2, hundreds upon hundreds of wheaties, one IH, several merc and silver roosies, a seated liberty half dime, silver quarters, and on and on. My question is what would the various different gold coins read at I don't own any or at the very least I would air test it. Has anybody found any gold coins with the MXT and remember what they registered at? By the way, I found a 1907 IH that looks like it was lost brand new, all details intact and perfect green patina but it registered like a newer penny? Anybody have this happen? I only use it in coin and jewelry mode, if I switched to relic what would the silver coins and the pennies register like? Same numbers in different modes or no? Thanks in advance.

As far as Indian heads,(any coin really) from my understanding, the well worn coin should give a lower VDI due to less mass, but there are too many other variables concerning soil conditions to really worry about it. I've had IH's show up anywhere from 50 to70ish . I hunt in thick iron a lot, so anything above 50 or so has the potential to be a copper/silver coin.

As far as CJ vs Relic, the Vdi's will be the same, just a different target ID. I started out in CJ exclusively for a few months and recommend that others do the same, or at least spend a majority of their time there until they can discern between hot rocks, falsing, whispers, etc. I use Relic almost exclusively now, because a lot of times I'm "looking for" iron to locate the position of structures.

I haven't found gold either so no experience to relate. My understanding is that they basically are where you find them VDI wise, with 20 to 50 being the core area.

Well I wouldn't know anything about finding gold coins....

...and I don't use an MXT....but I know that with different detectors I have used I found that once pennies have been in the ground long enough to turn green, they start reading like zinc pennies.

I have no idea why.

thanks for the info guys.. MLW- that face just cracks me up! I went detecting today and found myself making the same face after finding some old wheaties where I didn't expect to find any
found a piece of float copper today- registered like a penny- 3rd piece I've found. I got it made around here for detecting... all sand, bottom of old glacial lake, not a rock to be found unless you find an arrowhead so I think my vdi #'s or whatever they are called are probably different from most peoples using the same machine.. there's no iron in the ground, no nothing, just sand. I looked at that chart and mine are similar but certainly not the same. For example, every single silver dime I have ever found read 81. Quarters are 83-84. Copper penny 74 Zinc penny 67. Unless I'm looking for nickels and jewelry (50% of the time) I don't even dig any signals below 60. That one indian head penny read like a 67-68 (zinc penny) but it was deep. I gotta find another to see if it happens again, maybe tomorrow...

Hey Cannon- yours are pretty much identical to mine. That Merc I got the other night was 82-83, 67 seems the most common for IH's(same as a screwcap), 74 for wheats, 65-67 for zincs (same as IH's). HH

MXT- now for me the mercs are always a SOLID 81 and the quarters are always a solid 83. The county I live in though in nothing but SAND. Old glacial lake bottom- makes detecting nice, digging is nice, but I have some problems realting to other peoples VDI's with coins and related depths... and when I travel out of the area I might as well be detecting with a new machine I've never used before because soil changes things a lot. Also found that moisture content of the soil makes a HUGE difference. Springtime seems to be the best because this sandy soil drys out fast come summer.

Cannon you know you can always air test my Quarter Eagle.
On my DFX it reads the same as the big honking 14K ring I found this weekend with a vid# of 30 at 15 KHZ. The coin you will see will read at all of 8 inches.

Gold will read anywhere on the meter which is why the old Whites analogue meter machines had a yellow band going across the whole of the meter.
Gold coins can be pure gold or alloyed with different percentages of other metals. Rings are alloyed with anything from alloy which makes detection easier, to iron which makes things worse if much discrimination is applied.
With the same gold coin as Devin my old XLT will give a loud positive signal at 11 inches plus so don't right off the older machines.

Hey cannonman,after 20 years of detecting i found 2 gold half Sovereigns last year and they were only weeks apart, first one i found at an old farm site and the other one at a race track.
The reading on the MXT was 28 same as pulltabs,so if you want to find gold coins be prepared to dig plenty of pulltabs.
