MXT and no gold rings.

I have found 30 rings this year, but no gold rings. With my old detector which was a whites eagle II SL I found quite a few gold rings. what am I doing wrong. I set my MXT to coin/jewelry gain to 1.5 disc to preset. I use a 6x9 eclipse dd coil. I dig everything most cases from VDI reading 10-50 but never any gold rings. What am I doing wrong? Does anyone have any tips that I can try or suggestions?. I know I must have passed over some all the places I have been. I know gold rings are hard to find, but think I should of found at least one by now. Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

You are not doing anything wrong if you are digging all the signals. Gold rings are not everywhere and some times it takes a while to find one. My best gold finds have been in the tot lots. Keep digging and gold will be in your hands.

Its not your detector, you just haven't gotten the coil over a gold ring. If you are still finding pull tabs you are in the right range.

In general, a CZ will find gold rings in these ranges.
16%….(25)…Ring tab
38%….(61)…Foil
3o%….(48)…Square tab
9%……(15)…Nickel

Did you put a gold ring down and check to see if your detector will pick it up sound off on it ? If it does your detector and setting is right .. If it does not then something wrong with your detector or your setting..

From my own limited experience.....running in coin/jewelry mode is not the best way to find gold. Basically because that mode often neglects the pull tab and foil range. Run it in an open mode and dig everything from foil up(however that translates on the MXT).

Of course as others have said, you may not have put your coil over gold either. :) I find I go through long dry streaks....then I'll hit a bunch of gold. It's weird.

My nephew has a MXT. And it's a great detector.but, i got him to get a 1266 X fisher detector, as a back up. And he has got some good items the MXT missed. But if there is a ring in the area you are searching.and you have your settings right with the MXT you will find them.

I don't think that ..jrcjrc .. The one that started this thread is around here any more he has not posted for 6 months...

When I first started detecting, I went for quite a while without finding any rings, cheapies or otherwise. After I finally broke the ice, I've been finding rings, not real often, but often enough. I think that location plays a larger part in finding rings than what detector is in use.

I agree. Location is everything for jewelry finds.

Take a mens or ladies wedding ring and tie a strong cord to it. Set your detector up for area your hunting, get a good ground balance. Bury the ring at 4-6 inches leaving the end exposed and run your machine over it did it detect? Great. If not adjust to pick up the ring til you get a strong signal. You should use no or minimal discrimination for best depth. Then if you get over a ring your golden. HH

I have gotten gold rings with my MXT and they hit hard. So the detector is more than capable. I have found them amongst the pull tabs which can be difficult. I try and study the typical number for the common pull tabs at the site I am at and if there is a slight difference, I dig. Still bring home some trash, but gold has found its way in my pocket as well.

Maybe you have your discrimination set too high. When I first started I realized I had not found any nickels. I took a gold ring out to test and it did not pick it up. I finally realized I had discriminated that out. Turn it back!

Well I am still looking for gold rings, none yet. What are some of the VDI re3ading some of you get when you have found a gold ring? No one every really writes anything on what the readings are for gold rings they find. And what coil they are using at the time of the find. It would be very helpful also the settings of there detector to compare with.

Don't know what detector you're using, but the OP was about the MXT, so.... I've found a lot of gold rings, and other things gold, with my MXT. A small or thin ring will come on my machine at around 7 to 15. A larger ring around 18 to 30 or so, and a huge ring as high as 47. Gold can be all over the place, except in the silver range. That's why I use as little discrimination as possible and dig most all signals. It's a lot of work but that's the only way to not leave a lot of gold in the ground. I personally think discrimination is not the friend of a serious detectorist. But I LOVE to see OTHERS using it!

Thanks for the Info. I am using the MXT with 6 x 10 eclipse coil. I will try less discrimination and see how that goes. Any other advice would be appreciated.
