MXSport 9.5 concentric coil.

Given two round coils of approx. same diameter, the concentric coil may provide better pinpointing ability because of its inverted conical vertical "field of view" into the ground [i.e., the base of the cone is the coil and the apex is the maximum theoretical detection depth] vs. the roughly cylindrical field of view provided by a DD coil. Some also say, because of the concentric nature of the coil, it is better able to filter out or discriminate round, undesirable targets such as rusted bottlecaps that may otherwise ring up as coins vs. a DD (the elliptical 6x10 DD would provide better target separation vs. either the round DD or concentric, but may still have trouble not falsing on bottlecaps- haven't explicitly tested this myself). The very feature that enables more precise pinpointing is also a disadvantage vs. a DD because for deeper targets it requires you pass the center of the coil directly over the target for the target to be detected. Good for trashy sites with shallow targets, where you perhaps want to minimize the disturbance to the ground during target recovery. I pulled the trigger on the MX Sports pack deal offered by Whites where you get the two accessory coils (6x10 DD and 9.5 Concentric Eclipse) a bag and hat for about $280. Not bad vs. purchasing the coils separately. I did give the two accessory coils a trial run at a relic site yesterday (iron infested and highly mineralized plowed field) and the results were inconclusive as I do not think that was an ideal situation for those coils in general and certainly not for comparison purposes, but it was raining so I took the opportunity to use the MX sport under rainy conditions and so I could get used to the controls, display, and tones. I had the elliptical coil on the machine when I arrived at the site because I was using it in my test garden to see how it did with the tone "smearing" issue which I consider a non issue with that coil so I can live without getting the update for now. I did not test with the concentric in the test garden but will likely do so today with more rigorous testing using the stock coil also. While I did use the concentric and elliptical coils at the relic site, I did not feel like changing coils for the third time so did not run with the stock coil at all. I pulled some iron out of the ground with the MXS and got a feel for the differing response to iron signals and mineralizaion with two accessory coils, but like I said, it think it was pretty inconclusive. Both coils were able to "see" a test CW bullet I dropped into some holes in various spots but did not find any keeper relics with the MXS. FWIW, when it stopped raining, I pulled out my Deus and 9" coil and pulled three different CW bullet types out of the ground before I had to pack it in for the day (not a conclusive comment or comparison between the Deus and MXS since I never used the MXS stock coil which would have probably been the best coil for the job at hand, besides I would hope that a detector package that costs twice as much as the MXS would outperform it, lol!). Hope the Concentric vs. DD discussion helped but I have concluded that there are no "sure things" especially in MDing, I am sure others will have differing opinions on the question, so the adage "your mileage may vary" definitely applies.

I use the 10 inch DD stock coil when I'm relic / field hunting. The 950 concentric coil I use in parks / high trash areas. The 950 gives more reliable VDI numbers and therefore does a better job identifying trash and pulling coins out of bottlecap/pulltab infested public places. Hope this helps! H Digs
