It's based on the MXT and runs with the same threshold hum. Set that so it's just audible - some don't like it, but they may be running it too high. After getting used to it on the MXT I miss it on silent detectors.

Try it in the salty beach sand Fletch let us know what kind of depth you get. Enjoy the new toy !

I run the threshold low at 6-8 just to hear slight fluctuation from ground noise. I hit a small area in my yard where my uncle had his little fab shop using 2 tone yesterday evening. This spot is loaded with iron, blobs of aluminum junk, and everything in between. I actually like the Mx-5 better than the F-19 in iron. I found a brass oiler, bullet, brass thumb nut and a stainless steel valve stem cap at 7-8" in the middle of iron. I have walked through this area with the Omega, F-19, Tejon, Sov GT, and a ETP. I will have to say this MX-5 is so smooth and stable it impresses me on how sensitive it is to small targets. The standby mode is awesome too! ImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1426357038.144536.jpg

Would have been great to compare the signals in-situ by first scanning with the MX5 as a good known signal, and verifying with the other machines. The MX5 is a nice machine, looks like Whites has improved it.

Yes I may have to do that this week. I'm off work for the first full week in 7 years! I really was not expecting to find anything since I have had several detectors through this same path and it was right at dark. I mainly wanted to hear how the 2 tone sounded in heavy iron and check out the backlight. I know these are just modern junk targets but could not believe how they "jumped" out of the iron audio at me (I know the big brass oiler is a given), but the smaller stuff was very easy to pick out and at considerable depths.

Fletch, the MX5 is a real sleeper. I used one for most of last year's detecting season and found it to be fast, deep, and accurate. If some people can get by it's looks(coinmaster gt and other low end Whites machines), they would astounded at how good it is. Just never caught on, but lots of features and performance in an easy to use package.

How would you compare the MX-5 with the MXT Pro ? That is if you used both .

Keppy, very similar performance. The MX5 tracking system lacks "Track Lock" which I never had a problem with. I have had several detectors with auto ground tracking that did not work as advertised, but the MX5 worked fantastic in all areas I detected. I contacted the factory with some questions and the words the from the fellow I talked to were:"MX5 has an MXT hyper circuit" Is this fluff or for real, I don't know. I don't see any recognizable performance advantages over the MXT Pro. The only real advantage other than the "track lock" is the price which is about 200 bucks cheaper. Also, it is lighter, but as stated before, it is an all plastic detector. I really do prefer the aluminum boxes on the MXT-DFX which are extremely durable.

Thanks RL OH, the lack of track lock is the only thing I've heard 1 or 2 people say they miss about the mx5 vs MXT when in heavy iron laden ghost town type places.

Keppy, I have not used the MX5 long enough, and never used the MXT, to see if the lack of Track Lock is a problem for me but from the test in my yard that is full of large and small bits of iron it did not seem to be a problem. The audio is my favorite so far from a long list of machines I have tested over the last 3 years. (Every Minelab, Omega, ETP, Every Tesoro except screened ones or Golden, Cz-3d, Cz-5, ATPro, Ace350, F-19)

RL OH, have you used the 5.3 concentric and the 4x6 DD? Which do you like better? I tend to like the way concentrics ID better VS a DD just wanted another opinion.

Fletch, I used the 5.3 concentric when I needed a smaller coil. It was as good as any small coil setup I have used. I never liked the 4x6 as it seems smaller than it really is. The 5.3 is really either 6.5 or 6.75 inches in diameter and I was getting an honest 6 to 7 inches of depth.

I want this machine more and more everytime I read about it. Can someone tell me how this machine would compare to a Deleon since they seem to be in the same price range? I had a Deleon at one time and it was nice, thats why I ask.

The White's MX5 is a depth monster with accurate VDI #'s

I have to say that I really like mine with the 6½" 5.3 Eclipse coil in ONE tone running in the iron.
My wife has the Deleon, nice machine BTW but just not in the same league. I had read all the reviews and talked (PM) to RLOH about the MX5 and and talked on the phone with Monte and all of them were spot on. In single tone with the first 3 iron segments notched out... it will keep up with the best of them in the iron nail infested homesteads that I hunt at. It looks like a Coinmaster but under the hood it is a super charged Hemi.

Nothing against Tesoro as I've owned every one except the Compadre and Deleon, and use a Tiger Shark for freshwater, but for me any machine with 2 tones and zero disc I prefer much so I can let all audio come through instead of having to disc out iron and using single tone. Just my preference. The 8 tone audio is very pleasing too!

I love the mx5. I have a coin master that I used for a couple of years. I have carpal tunnel in my wrist and after about an hour my wrist and hand would start hurting using the coinmaster but the mx5 is balanced just right. I can use it for hours. But just one thing I would like to know. I also have iron real bad in my yard. I have iron discriminated out up to zero but I still get a lot of tones in the iron range. Is this normal? Does anyone else's mx5 do this?

Holy smokes what a honker! ImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1426517848.683018.jpg

It feels plated but I can make out a 18K with some other mark behind it. Will check out with the loupe when I get home.
