Musket Turn Screw Driver SOLVED DMan&Taz

Hey Gang,
I MD today for about an hour, which is my first time out since I fractured my vertebrae. (No pain, no gain :laughing7:) I was MD in one of my old areas that has produced quite a few Civil War items; it is also the same area I found the Sambo cap gun.

Do you think this is a musket turn screw driver? At first I thought it was a paint can opener with a strange handle, but then I noticed the end was shaped like a screw driver.

Below is a photo of one, and some information I copied/pasted from the website in which I got the photo. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks ;D Breezie

A turn screw (screw driver) and a screw.

The driver is used to remove the barrel and lock for cleaning, and to repair the lock if required. The screw is used to "pull the load", you attach the screw to the end of the ramrod and insert it down the barrel. Then you screw it into the soft lead ball or the wad, depending on whether or not you are using ball or shot, and pull it out. This is done if you don't wish to fire the gun but want to store it away, or if the load should get wet and won't fire.

Sorry to have to say it, but no. The rusty object you found does not resemble any 19th-century (or earlier) guntool I've ever seen. I think your own original guess is correct, because it does greatly resemble the cheap "giveaway" paintcan lid openers which are often included with the purchase of paint at stores like Home Depot ...or possibly a cheap "giveaway" screwdriver.

Yeah, this doesn't resemble a musket tool. They were usually of a set pattern with several different uses, one part for a screw driver, a pick to clear the vent, maybe a worm or a flint knapper, sort of the multitool of the 18th century!

Nice screwdriver but not for a musket. I think maybe a sewing machine.

If you search for vintage wire screwdrivers you will find them, there is a few on ebay.
I have one in my toolbox, just a plain old screwdriver.

Re: Musket Turn Screw Driver ?

Thanks to all for the replies. DMan & Taz win the Kewpie Doll ID-ing it as a regular wire screw driver and/or sewing machine screw driver. At least it's definitely not a cheap paint can opener (maybe a 1st cousin ;D ) because the paint can opener has a hook at the end for easy opening. The best news: I was able to get outside for a little while on a beautiful day to MD, which beats a day at work anytime! :laughing7: Thanks again, Breezie
