Hello,
I saw this Ebay auction, and I wondered what kind of
musket used this plate. I asked the seller but he didn't
know and he said there were no marks on it ??? :icon_study:

Re: Musket plate, but what model?

It is a plate for a percussion rifle ,penna style after 1848 the end of the flintlock era.

Re: Musket plate, but what model?

Looked again, it does not show the signs of conversion from flint lock there is some signs of a name of the lock maker on the plate but I cant read time, locks like these were mass produced abroad and sold in bulk to rifle makers and gun smiths at the time. Bob

Not an Enfield, could be British, Belgian, American or ?. Not a musket lock, most likely a rifle. Looks like one of the mass produced locks for the gunbuilding trades. There were many makers here and abroad. Most likely 1840's through 1870's.

I don't believe this is a military size lock. I don't think it is one used in a conversion from flint. A flint lock is usually placed with 2 screws and this has only one. The lock plate is also usually pointed or clipped off square at the end. I don't think this is an antique lock. Just one in poor condition. Actually it looks like a Cochran lock. I used one in building a rifle several years ago.

One or two screws isn't a real indicator, I have found them both ways, but this one does not show any indication of a conversion from flint.Plugged screw holes where the frizzin and frizzin spring were is the real giveaway and I can 't see those. Bob
