I have been detecting the area where the Battle of Crooked River took place on October 25th, 1838 for the past few months (when I get the chance). I have found quite a few musket balls in the past but thought I would take my video camera out to show everyone how easy they are to find.

This bullet was shot on October 25th 1838 either by the Morman Militia or the Ray County Militia during the battle. The location of this site was found by a lot of research and getting to know the land owners.

Anyone who is new to this hobby or considering beginning this hobby should view your well made video. That's the real world of detecting a historic site and the excitement of detecting and digging a relic that is well over 150 years old. Every ball you recover will enhance your understanding of the battle layout. HH, Quindy.

If anyone is interested in the site I am detecting I have a webpage devoted to it. I normally don't share the url but you are correct people new to the hobby need to know where to start and how to progress on a historic site. If you check out the http://www.battleofcrookedriver.com website I suggest you read the daily log in order to see exactly how I found this site and how I got permission to detect it.

True, if it were us, we would GPS them all & make a Map, therefore the understanding bit will be far more obvious  (plus no lost Historical Record, which a battlesite deserves). It's the next step from a hobbist to a someone with a real Historical interest. Otherwise, all you have is a few common musketball & memories, which means very little to future study.

Think about it. It's worth the effort & a GPS is less than your Mobile phone (plus you may already have it on your phone) :icon_thumright: It will get you more land & no Archie can say you robbed the site of its information. Therefore, making you stand out from the rest.

Your did the research & permission gaining, why not spent the same time on post-finding activities/analysis. You would go down in History as the first to Map the Battlesite. You don't have to share the map with anyone until the time is right but at least you would have it & understand it more than any other. Its worth the time, trust me
