I have found many metal balls over the years but I think I may have found my first musket ball.
Found in a field that I have found other civil war relics.
I am no expert but could this be a musket ball? It hase a strange line on it that makes think it is not..
Forgot to post my other finds, buckle and bullet no idea on dates or types

Re: Musket ball? Bullet? Buckle?

I'm no expert but it looks like a musket ball. Early ball were cast into molds that split in two parts. That line across it may be the mold mark. Someone here with more experience will know. Nice finds!

Re: Musket ball? Bullet? Buckle?

Because the lead ball you found is NOT lumpy-bumpy or out-of-round, it does appear to be a musketball. The slight line across it is indeed a mold seam line. (By the way, an actual mold seam is ALWAYS located where the Equator ine is located on a world globe.)

Also, your musketball appears to be the correct size for a .69-caliber musketball, which was typically about .67-inch in diameter.

I should mention that your lead ball could also be an antipersonnel ball from an explosive cannon-shell (called a "Case-Shot" ball). But because you have not reported finding any exploded shell fragments in the vicinity of your lead ball, it is most probably a musketball, not a Case-Shot ball.

The bullet you found is definitely an unfired .58-caliber Gardner type, which was strictly a Confederate bullet.

Would it make sense to start a new post on musket balls? I have found several over the years. Some in Revolutionary War related spots, others in the woods where I have found civil war relics. I have always wondered if any of them could be identified as to what they may have been?
