I have been hunting at a location on the IL side that in the early 1900's was a carnival area, then in the 1940's was a catholic seminary / college. Now it is still owned by the Catholic church and is a private park. I got ran out once, thinking that it was a PUBLIC park, then decided to ask permission to the head priest to hunt the area. After an hour long, "coming to Jesus" talk, he granted me permission.
I have found a lot of junk there, the seminary college is now torn down so there is a lot of metal debris there. I found a handful of wheat pennies and 3 silver Roosevelt dimes, but one of the last times I went there I discovered these rings.
I got a bouncy silver signal about 4 inches down at the base of an old Sycamore tree stump near the lake. They were all in the same hole pretty much. 11 rings total, 9 of which had silver or sterling silver markings on them. One in the background is not a real stone, and the other appears to be made from a spoon handle, but has no markings.
I have no idea why they were all there, or how long they would have been there. The town is kind of trashy and old at this point, so, they are probably stolen! However, my wife had an interesting theory: She says that she read that back in the day before women would enter into the church to become a nun, and men, before entering the priesthood, had to get rid of all jewelry and belongings not affiliated with the church. Maybe some or all of this represents some young man or woman burying their jewelry on the grounds to retrieve it if they left the church?
Who knows; either way, I am going to turn it all in to the head priest or cash it in and donate it to them for letting me hunt there.
