What a great morning at the beach today. I started in a washed out flat just as the sun was coming up. As I was walking along I got a great dollar signal and dug out a very crusty large coin. I thought it would be a clad Eisenhower Silverdollar... So I put it in my pouch without cleaning it off and kept going. I had a similar looking coin that was a quarter that I thought was also a clad. After about 2 1/2 hours I decided to call it quits. When I got home my finds looked like this: (first photo)

I started by cleaning the large coin into my complete surprise it was a 1907 Barber half-dollar! The quarter was also a first for me as it was my first standing liberty quarter from the beach. It was a very exciting group of finds! HH, all!

I have no experience with beach hunting - so I'm always surprised at how toasted silver comes up - Is this primarily due to the salt ?

I would assume that it's the effect of 100 years in salty mud. Mineralization... And the 10% copper content leaches out of these coins over time.
