Hey everyone,Saturday was a good day! It's deer season here in Maine and I'm one of the fortunate ones that you here about who shoot deer right out the back window, so far I'm 3 for three and still trying to make it four for four.My back attic window overlooks about 125 acres of fields so I just roll out of bed in the morning dump the water in the coffee maker and its off to the attic to sit and watch for deer, It's more like sniper season anyway after sitting for a couple hours with nothing happening I was getting bored and decided to do a little cleaning in my attic, thats one of the good things about hunting at home,it leaves time for other things especially with winter so close its a good time to get things buttoned up.There's a pile of old doors, storm windows and old window screens that I've been looking at way too long so I decided while I was up there that I could go through them and see what I should keep and what to throw out and still run over and look out the window every so often just in case.I live in a c.1870 farm house and have been through it pretty well looking for the stash that must be there even pulling up most of the floorboards in the attic to look underneith no stash was ever recovered. I moved a couple of storm windows and a window screen and I found an old tobacco pipe on the floor,Huum never saw that before then I moved a door and behind that on the floor was an old Whittemores 5 oz. bottle I moved another and on the floor behind that a little rectangular bottle aqua in color and embossed Hire's improved root beer this little bottle made five gallons of rootbeer when mixed with soda water then I moved another and found an old Certo bottle, another concentrated syrup drink. After moving everything I noticed a crack in the sheathing boards about an inch and a half wide and running horizontal and on the same level as the attic floor I ran down and got a flashlight so I could see in the crack Shining the light in I saw an old tobacco tin, could this be it?I wasn't able to get my arm in far enough so I got one of those magnets on an extendable post like a radio antenna and reached in with that I pulled it out and it was empty but it was a 1926 Velvet pipe and cigg. Tobacco tin 1-1/2 oz. in near mint condition after that I was on a roll I did every bay in the attic where the rafters come down across the top plate and the rafter tails extend out beyond the wall your sophitt boards are nailed onto the bottom of the rafter tails and that makes a nice little shelf for things that fall over the edge to catch up on. well, to make a long story a little shorter heres what I came up with.A Pipe,a Whittemores medicine bottle,a Hires improved rootbeer syrup bottle,a Wrights Dairy 1 quart milk bottle,a paper label vitamin E lotion sample bottle,A cork stop beer or soda bottle,a Certo syrup bottle,a paper label baking soda tin, again thought this was my stash but it wasn't, 5- 1926 Velvet tobacco tins and one Union Leader Tobacco tin,all 1-1/2 oz. and all empty. Also an old caramels 1c cardbord wrapper, a 1932 postage stamp,A baby food jar filled with various size paperboard sticky back disks, again at first glance I thought this was my stash but it wasn't.Also an old fawn's foot knife, obviously very old. There was also a lot of other stuff pulled out but nothing else worth mentioning. If you have an old attic like mine make sure you search these bays and please let me know what you come up with, maybe yours holds that secret stash please send me a private message in case I miss your post and good luck!!!So you all know I have searched all these bays previously with a flashlight and a mirror so I could see where my eyes couldn't get and I only found a couple old bottles, the magnet was the trick that really produced the attic treasures that I had previously missed.I'm gonna try to post some pictures now,Happy Hunting,Bootstrap

Yes romeo-1 technically in maine you can take more than one deer in a season but only with an expanded archery season license. In my case I was talking about three deer in three seasons trying for four in four, hope this clears things up for you.Bootstrap

Romeo....In Maryland where I hunt you can take as much as 50 deer in two different region's and UNLIMITED DOE in five countie's,We're talking about whitetail and sika(Japenese import runnin' wild)...Gotta love it...Oh yeah Bootstrap,When I was living in WI. I found a hunting license from 35'....ended up being my buddie's grandfather who had passed on so he now has a piece of his Grandad's past...Those attic floorboard's were spaced apart far enough to take in all the goodie's.....HH!! and HHunting!!!!

Heres the pics I promised

no,civilman-1 the goodies weren't beneath the floorboards they were in the bays where roof comes down over the top of the wall, see pics thanx, bootstrap

Welcome to the forum Bootstrap Vinn. Great hunts, both ways. Here in SE Kentucky the deer population is on a boom. I would say that soon enough they will need to expand the hunting to thin them down some.

3 Weeks ago I went outside to have a smoke and there were 21 in my yard. One real nice buck perhaps 14 pt. Which is fairly nice here.

Hey postalrevnent,Thanx for the reply, not too bad huh?Although it's not metal detecting which this site and I myself am dedicated to it was still a treasure hunt and I did come up with a few modest treasures, plus I acomplished cleaning in my attic and god knows if there was a deer around I probably would have scored on that too!! Bootstrap

You do realize that while you were digging that stuff out, a 14 point boone & crockett buck wandered through your backyard ;)

Hear ya Bootstrap....I knew you were talkin' about the "eave's",this was just my own personal attic attack....HH!!

Texas gets five as I recall.

You lucky dogs...In Nova Scotia you can only harvest one deer, a buck. There are a limited number of doe tags but they are chosen by lottery and I have yet to win one...of course now the does outnumber the bucks 5 to 1...

Hey will.dig.for.food,Thanx for the GL wish I need it!Haven't seen anything in 11 days.Anyway pretty ironic finding that deer foot Knife Huh?Its a Franz Frenzel,Czechoslavakian.Later man,

Hi Bootstrap. Cool stuff to find in your own attic. How long have you lived there?

I hunt deer (and pretty much everything else!) too. Here in CA we can get a max of two bucks, depending on the unit we get tags for. If you get a prime unit tag, one is it for the season. Mostly blacktail, mule deer and blacktail/mule deer hybrids in our area. Our seasons are long over, but I'm getting ready for a wild hog hunt this Saturday.

Wish I had a nice "blind" like yours, even though it might make me feel like I had to stay home instead of getting to go deer hunting. What do you think of the attached pic? Look like the view outside your window?

Hey mountainplayer,Thanx for the pic, looks exactly like outside my window minus the house in the background LOL!!I wish, the most I've ever seen at once was five. This is my fourth hunting season in this house. Here in Maine you can take one Buck with a minimum of 3" spikes and one black bear along with various other small game during the open firearms deer season. We also have an any-deer lottery which is bucks less than 3" spikes and does but you can only take one deer, got my any-deer permit last four years. It's a little confusing cause you can only take one deer either in archery season rifle season or muzzle loading season but if you buy an expanded archery season license you can take multiple antlerless deer with a bow for a $12 each tag fee and one extra buck for a $32 tag fee but only with a bow and only in certain designated areas.Yee-hah don't you love our state, confuse the s#&% out of ya!anyway good luck on your wild boar hunt I'd love to be going with ya! That must some good eating and make for a heck of a pig roast.Later man,Bootstrap

In Texas we shoot trespassers. Deer are trespassers since I don't want them on my land . I like them better in the fridge. ;D

Great story bootstrap. I love to search old houses for those things long forgotten and lost. Cool finds you made.
We have so many deer here in my area of Tennessee that you can kill 6 bucks per season and 3 doe per day. We have a fairly long season so if you killed the limit every day and hunted every day you could kill over 300 doe. :o
Have a good one.
