Hey everyone,
I was hoping to hit my neighbor's 1920s house today but it turns out they were out of town. My back up was to hit up the 1955 house of a family friend. She is like another grandma to me so she thought it was great that I wanted to take a pass over the yard.
I had low expectations for a couple reasons. First, she mentioned her late husband owned a metal detector and took it all over with him. She said she couldn't remember if he ever did their yard. Second, the front yard wasn't as large as I remembered and looking well manicured (which often means the grass has been replaced at some point). Turns out dirt has been added and it's been reseeded but never totally replaced.
I hunted the front yard for a while and found a couple wheats, "not bad considering the odds" I was thinking. Then she mentioned I was welcome to try the backyard as well. I was excited when I got back there because the grass was much patchier.
My first dig in the backyard was a war nickel:
I kept at it for a while and wasn't finding much. I found a wheat a little while later and then got a 77-81 reading at 3". I was thinking it was decent depth but probably just a Memorial by the tone. "Definitely not silver" I'm thinking. I was surprised when my fistful of dirt revealed this two-coin spill:
A merc and a wheat in the same hole, I'll take it! The wheat was pulling the signal down which is why it didn't sound like silver.
I found a couple more wheats after that. All things considered, a great morning of hunting!
Totals:
-1 Merc (43)
-1 War Nickel (45-D)
-5 Wheats (44D, 45D, 54S, 56D, 57D)
Good luck with your last hunts of 2017 and first hunts of the new year!
