Since people always tell me to post, I thought I would post one of my finds from my first day of going to yard sales this year.

Was only able to find about 10 or so. This one was labeled an estate sale and had ridiculous prices on EVERYTHING. For example, there was a milk glass sugar shaker that had its entire bottom broken off and missing and they wanted $10 for it. They had other relative common pieces of glass priced as high as $300. They wanted $75 for a cheap aluminum walker. I overhead them talking to customers about what stuff was going for on ebay.

So when I first saw these shakers, I was shocked to see a $5 price tag on them. There is a single one on ebay right now with a $45 bid at the moment. I think I'll keep these for a while.

I also picked up a pair of mini T. Moto sterling .950 salt shakers, a pair of C. Molina Tijuana Mexico Sterling cufflinks, and a Knights of Columbus 25 years sterling pin for $2.25. And they had absolute junk modern costume jewelry priced at $10 each and they talked about how much time they spent polishing the "silver" (silverplate) and they must not have noticed the real silver as all of this stuff is badly tarnished.

Every other yard sale was full of dollar general merchandise.

Nice finds, It truly amazes me how some of these people price their stuff, I stopped by a sale last weekend and the guy had a plastic dolly, like to move stuff, and had a $32.50 price tag on it, so I asked how he came up with that price and he started talking about how much he paid for it. I just shook my head and walked away. Unbelievable.........Scott.

Yeah, some people are always trying to justify their high prices with no real logical reasoning behind it.

Stopped back at that sale today and picked up some more good stuff on half off day. Picked up a nice Fenton Red Daisy/Fern Cruet for $25 and a nice local souvenir pipe ash tray for $10. Just wanted that piece for my collection. Also picked up a nice 1920s era wood plant stand for $20 since I needed one and I got a tri kappa sterling charm for free. Not a bad day at all.

Thanks for posting. Nice finds. I love the salt and pepper. I buy all vintage/antique salt/peps whenever I can.
What are the markings on the cufflinks exactly? I've never heard of sterling made in Tijuana. C.Molina is a (lesser) known Mexican silversmith and cufflinks are beginning to be en vogue again.
Decent score on the Fenton, should be able to make a little on it. That's funny because I picked up 3 pieces of Fenton myself today.

STERLING
TIJUANA MEX
C MOLINA

They aren't very fancy or stylish. Just circular with a crudely inlaid piece of round black glass.

Yeah, the Fenton piece (if I ever decide to sell it) is in the $40-80 range depending on the day and bidders. But, I plan on keeping this one. I can never find these pieces locally for this price. At auction locally it would bring about $75. Fenton like this, people generally pay higher than ebay prices for, which I never understand.

What pieces did you pick up?

I picked up 3 pieces, a pair of candle holders and a vase. All Silver Crest, Spanish Lace, with the "Violets in the Snow" handpainted design on them.
The vase is signed (Valorie)V. Gherke and the candlesticks are signed Vicki A. (Anderson? I believe). I'll post them up tonight with a coupls other things I found. Nothing spectacular though.
I got all 3 pieces for $5 at an estate sale "in the hood" this morning, along with a cool pair of pre-war Lobster salt & peppers for a buck.

Nice that they are all HP /SIGNED. Common pieces of silvercrest with no paint can be tough to move, but at $5 you buy them all day long. You ever find any Louise Piper pieces? I haven't found one around here in years.

Oh yeah, the cruet I found earlier wasn't red, it's Cranberry Opalescent. Regular red I would have just left on the table at that price.

I haven't found any L. Piper pieces, I know hers fetch a pretty good price usually. I'm glad they were painted too, though I would have still bought them if they were plain. I just wish they would have had the salt and peppers to go with them. Those are pretty hard to find at a good price. For some reason I assumed you meant Cranberry on the Cruet anyway. The only cranberry opalescent I ever find are those stupid little mini hobnail vases.

Yeah, I rarely find any cranberry unless I'm at an antique mall or an auction. And yeah, I see those little cranberry hobnail vases pretty often here, too. I see those little vases in all colors, especially in blue.

bazinger, you're so much like me when it comes to these sales. As I mentioned in other posts, the estate sales here are also a joke. The lady who runs it loves to tell me how much time she spends researching each item, then goes into detail how they sell on e-bay. She must hate me already becuase I always tell her, if I wanted to pay the e-bay price I'd have it already :laughing7:

She also touts about old 35mm cameras, so I ask, are they working and where do you buy film :dontknow: :laughing7: Here too, many items are not working, broken, or in some other state of bad deterioration and not not 2 cents. :tongue3: You just have to be patient and find that jewel in the rough, they are there.

Spart, Yeah, I'm glad estate sales are a rarity around here and not common like other places. They treat them like they are a full blown retail operation. Sometimes I want to be a jerk and remind them that they aren't a retail location with customers that came here to pay retail. Yesterday even at half off they couldn't sell 90% of their antiques. And then I got into a small argument with a lady about a 1840s-1860s era cabinet that she had. The top was a completely different type of wood and a different color and looked brand new. She tried to argue with me that her grandmother just took really good care of her stuff, so I dropped it as she was getting very defensive.

If we had a local company doing estate sales they would probably hate me too, haha. This one this weekend was run entirely by the family. There was an old man in like his 70s that came in while I was there and was trying to buy a pair of prism vases. He was just abusing these people with his "knowledge" and then touted that he had been in the business for almost 10 years. That really made me laugh, haha. I was expected him to say "for over 40 years!"
