well today my wife went to the field with me again. We hit the field where I got the 1886 seated dime the other day....I got the 3 CRUSTY indians you see, and the thing marked Faoen, not sure what it is?

Anyhow, she kicked my butt, getting her first EVER silver.....remember her first field coin this year was a 1859 indian.................

and her first silver is...............

1853 to 1855 seated HALF DIME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! it has a hole thru date, but it has arrows by date and those are only 1853-1855. When she found it she called me over and said what is this thing and handed it to me.....I started whooping and doing the happy dance for her and shouted it is a half dime!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have never even dug one yet in 4 yrs. She also got what I think is a butt plate to a rifle, am I correct on the ID?

Yup, that looks like a buttplate for an old muzzleloader to me. I can't tell you which one or type; but I'm sure it is. I'll look in one of my books and maybe I can identify it further (I've been interested in guns since I was a kid). It's probably brass isn't it?

You know, now with the Mrs. hunting silver too, it won't be long and there won't be any silver left in Ohio to find, lol.

Nice finds! Congrats :)

Congratulations !

Alright! Bringing home the good silver!! CONGRATS

awesome stuff! sure looks like a butt plate to me!

Sweet finds!! Finding a half dime on as her first silver is pretty awesome. Hope she gets out there more and kicks your butt!!

That is awesome, now if I could just get my wife to go detecting with me.

Congratulations to your wife...... even with the holes, the half dimes are a neat find. I have several, maybe four, every one has a hole thru Liberty's head. I just checked the one I have framed, no stars, 1860 date, no head either....... :dontknow:. I do know that the half dimes were so small that they holed them and strung them on a wire so they wouldn't get lost...... but as we know, they got lost anyway.

The thing marked Faoen is either a perfume cap lid or a lipstick cap lid. Park and Tilford, a company started in 1840 in NYC and an importer of French Perfume (among other things) introduced a perfumed line called Faoen in 1926. My assumption is in addition to the perfume, there were also cosmetics, including lipstick, baring the same name.

HH!

My congratulations to your 'Mrs' on her Half Dime find! :notworthy:
Some people are just natural born treasure finders . . . sure wish I'd married me one of those! :laughing7:

A little mangled but still a great recovery.

I don't have a half dime either after 18 yrs of hunting. The last 10 have been steady though. We'll get one man. My wife was hunting yrs ago and dug a Flying eagle. They seem to have the touch. They go so slow and it pays off.

Congrats

Congrats to you and the Missus !
great halfdime and indian Finds ;D
I got the same 'faoen' item a while back,
was one of those things I never got to posting as whatsit :laughing9:
though it was rather interesting... can't see what it would cover or dispense.
now we know it's cosmetic/perfume related
hmm, wonder what box it's in :D
Nice recoveries!
