Look at one of the main brands: Tesoro, Whites, Garrett, Minelab, Fisher, Teknetics. They all have solid, entry-level detectors that won't break the pocketbook. I would also suggest that you CALL on of the other forum sponsor, such as Bart at BigBoysHobbies.net . You'll get a much better deal.
 

Thank you Jason--I cancelled the order earlier and am doing more research.
We'd rather spend a little more and not have to upgrade right away.
Open to a specific suggestion. Will hunt around old homesteads and such quite a bit.

So your looking for things like coins, buttons, tokens, etc. One important point is knowing what area you live in. Some places have very mild soil, others can have a high iron content which makes it more difficult and means that you need a detector specifically made to handle that high mineralization. Lastly, what is your general budget you have in mind?
