Primary Interest:
Metal Detecting
I started metal detecting with my dad and his Garrett, when he moved up to White's 6000D2. He passed away in 1984 and I dug out his 6000D2 a few years ago, also buying a 5000D (Sears version) from CL. Dug several hundred in clad these past few years and 3 gold rings and bunch of silver rings/jewelry.

A couple of weeks ago I was surfing the ads and hit on a used MXT e-series posted 15 minutes earlier for $275, INCLUDING a Bullseye II pp (Yes, I said $275!). Needless to say, I told the guy I was en route (45 minutes) and I zoomed over to his apt. He had traded work for it a few years earlier and never had much success, now he needed the cash and was already regretting not pricing it higher, but he honored his ad and I grabbed it.

Having never used anything like it, I went out to my truck and loaded it up with AA's and tested it on the grass parkway and my first hit was a quarter! The next stop was a park near home where I had recently dug two silver rings with the 5000 and 6000 CM's that week and by golly if I didn't hit a 26 gm lawnmower modified silver ring with the MXT! After a lot of trial/error and reading a ton of the MXT forum posts, I have popped about $40 in clad, a man's silver bracelet, and a possible gold plate earring just from parks near home in a few days. And the nickels I was missing are starting to pop out of the ground with the MXT. Quite a difference from the CM's and I still like to swing those lighter "swords" to rest my arm, but I can't wait til I can afford to grab another coil or two to try on the MXT (4x6, 6x10, 5.3) since I do a lot of parks and schools.

I am digging deeper targets than I ever did with the CM's so every place I ever hunted is like virgin ground all over again with the MXT. I know that I need to get to know the machine better to start "going for the gold" jewelry. The CM's actually did a pretty good job on the gold, I just did not know what I was chasing with out the VID info to guide me.

Can't wait to get my hands on a good beach machine for summer in SoCal! I am pretty sure the MXT will pay for that one, too!

A couple of friends want to get machines this year and now I know exactly what to recommend. If you have MXT's or coils lying around , let me know!!

Thanks to all the posters who have contributed here and helped me decide to go with the MXt and given advice/tips on coils, and using the machine.

Congrats on the MXT and if you want the real deep stuff get the D2 coil and make sure to have good headphones for those deep whisper targets. I try and run +2 gain for depth as any higher the threshold is too jumpy to hear the really deep whisper targets and the D2 is not great with EMI. Even preset or above will give great depth and pretty good separation for a big coil, I've hunted pounded parks and get dimes at 10"+ with a few at 12" with the D2 coil. HH

The MXT is a good detector in the hands of someone that has learned it like Wingmaster. Get the 5.3 coil for the trashy parks and clean up. For the gold rings they are in the pull tab range on your screen. Detectors still can't tell the difference between them because of different conductivity or the metals they are alloyed with.:coffee2:
