First time being back there since the '70s when I use to hunt there. Few Spring Sodas, Japan Beer, various medicines including the K.A. Made in Japan. Broken bottles all over the place.

Just one broken one. Lots of tall amber Japan bottles I left there, I think they are beer. Lots of broken ABMs. Did not see any trace of BIMALs. My brother took me to three different areas. There are more areas we will check out later. Notice on the photo taken looking into the gulch you can see what I think is a turquoise sake bottle (no markings). There were quite a few of those I left too.

Turned out pretty nice all cleaned up. Most medicines were blank except for the amber K.A., 3 clear Owens bottles, a blue Castoria and a clear screw top with "Japan" (BM). Maybe I should dig a little deeper. Hopefully better stuffs will turn up next time.

Hey guys,

I'm a Mder as you guys can tell by my name. I was curious about your hobby. How do you determine where to dig for your bottles? I've been lurking in these forums and have seen some posts where you guys are even chased out by H50. Looks like a cool hobby, so i'm just inquiring. Also, what does someone need to do to get involved with bottle hunting and what kinds of bottles are everyone looking for? Anyways, thanks and have a great day. BTW nice looking bottles!!!

Nice clean up...those Spring Soda Works reminds me when I use to dig up Kawailoa, use to dig up plenty of those Spring and Waialuas machines, get different variations even though the bottles all pretty much look the same...miss those good ole day's when the mountain was open to everyone...

No BIMALs? I could be wrong, but it looks like there are a few BIMAL bottles in your picture. The tall amber bottle in the middle looks BIMAL and the clear one right next to it is very familiar to me. I've found several of those and they are invariably BIMAL turn molds. The KA is most certainly BIMAL (or more accurately, hand blown as there is no applied lip on most screw tops) if it's the same one shown in The Book. The screw tops can be tricky. If it's hand blown, the seam will run all the way to the top, but there will not be a seam running around the base of the screw top. The top will also be rough as if it was sanded off. These bottles were hand blown into a 2-piece mold (including the screw portion) and then cut off and sanded.

Some of those small aqua bottles could also be BIMAL, but I've also seen those show up as ABMs. Take another look, you may be surprized!

Note: Japan started making ABM bottles later than the U.S. I've dug many dumps where all of the Mainland bottles were ABM and the Asian bottles were still BIMAL. This puts the date at around the late teens or early 20's. A couple years earlier and you have a shot at quite a few varieties of BIMAL Hawaiian bottles - and you've already bagged the KA!

I checked The Book and it looks like your KA Made in Japan is indeed a K. Akahoshi #852 circa 1920

This is a subject much discussed between my brother and I. BIMAL Hawaiian sodes are indeed hard to find these days. Your best bet is to put in as much time as you can both digging and looking for new spots to dig. I had to put in a solid 20 hours of hard digging this weekend before I found my first sode - and that was in a known dump thick with BIMAL bottles! On my last weekend trip in February I dug for at least 20 hours and got no sodes at all - although there was that BIMAL Ahuimanu milk!

Put in your hours and you will get paid - count on it!
