Hi Everyone,
I heard about a new land donation to my towns conservation area, so I went out to take a look.
Still a lot of snow cover, but after a bit of hiking I discovered some items.
In the middle of a field, no signs of any structure, dug iron chains & rings, harness buckle, some plated brass handle whatsit with spring backed tongues.
Cigarette case covers?, one old slug, a watch & watch parts, flat button.
.22-.23 casing, 1-1/4" long.
A lionhead drawer pull, he's not too fierce anymore.
Best find. Brass pin with star on head, What is it ?
thanks for looking & great digs to all !

Nice digs. I like that not so fierce lions head. Looks like a good spot with that variety of finds... Arty

It's half of a rivet Herbie! It would be placed through the leather to be riveted, the washer placed on the other end, well, you know hehe.

Occasionally they can be found in Civil War sites. Might be an area to investigate a little more sometime!

Keeping up on those land deals, I've was told of one recently that I've been hitting before the city moves in and builds a pumping station. Great job, cool finds. HH

As said rivet head,we find those with the Stars in 1860ish sites.I used to know the name of the brand, but it escapes me!

The lion head looks to me like a door knocker..... ???

I agree. I have a few with anchors on them too from a CW era site.

Herbie,
I've got to ask. Do you ever sleep? :tongue3: :laughing9:
You are one of the, if not THE, most dedicated detectorist on Tnet. :occasion14:
Always a great variety to look at too.
Congrats. I like that lion head too.

They are Washington Arsenal Cody. Herbie, you made some more nice finds. The larger rivets were used in sword belts and the smaller were used in leather harness and knapsacks. Dman and I recovered several of them and some loose washers during our recent Arkansas trip. HH my friends, Quindy.

Very interesting finds there Herbie! :o
Like the old pocket watch and the "star" bolt! :icon_thumright:

Talk to you again next Saturday when I get home,

Long Term Forecast for Ocho Rios, Jamaica

Thanks Everyone !
Great IDs on the rivet ! I assume most items with stars have some history ;D
Esp Quindy for the Washington Arsenal ! I believe I have found the washers before,
quite thick with a beveled edge. :icon_scratch:
Doug, I look forward to finding a 'anchor' version. I have others, I need to take a closer look, I almost missed the mark on this one.
I swing my detector wherever & whenever I can, there are relics almost everywhere you can dig, hour here, hour there.
I actually just took four days off from digging, had to attend to some family issues.
TXC, This is a popular door Knocker design, (I have one waiting to install!)
but this is just thin brass, Drawer pull fershure :hello:
Dave, Enjoy those sunny jamaica days :icon_sunny:

I'm really pleased to have recovered an early military item from this hunt!
Thanks again & Great Digs to you all!
Here's my favorite lion recovered, pot metal ornament of some sort, surface find on rocky beach in MA last year, he's got a seaweed moustache :laughing7:

The piece in the second picture looks like it could be part of an old ceiling fan.

the big piece looks like a door stop... so handle doesn't damage wall .. sometimes had metal ploates to protect the wall.

Great Responses! Thanks to all.
ceiling fan blade holder Possible.
Door stop maybe.
There appear to be two spring loaded tongue latches (showing wear)
Why all the threads on the end at the end of what appears to be a 'bushing' surface.
My best guess would be 'Carriage door/storage area Handle latch'
Moving to Whatsit with new photos.
Best digs everyone ;D
