Shoe heel, barb wire, pieces of bottles and plates, square nail and stove pieces along with another Hapgrade snap found in same spot. Have been trying to find a privy for weeks. Today spent about 30 minutes probing without any luck. Noticed a slight 6ft circumference depression maybe a foot lower than the rest of the area Tried probing but a lot of rocks. Started digging on lower side. Went down about 18 inches where I found along the way the Hapgrade the shoe heel and various things including the horseshoe about a foot or so deep. Seemed to be getting into undisturbed soil. Moved to the other side of tree and about a foot down found about a three inch layer of what I think was ash. Finding bricks rocks and very loose dirt and some glass and nails along the way Not as young as I used too be, knees and everything else was getting sore. Not sure what I have found but intend on continuing Monday. The bottle neck I found looks to be 1900 or earlier. Tried probing again but just to many rocks. Wife wants me to stop. Says there is nothing there. A lot of rocks and the dirt is very dry and loose. How deep should I go before giving up and any guesses on what I have found? Sorry so long and rambling. Good luck to everyone this weekend.

I don't have an answer for how deep to dig, I'd just say dig until it stops being interesting. Depending on what's down there, that might be a while. You've got some interesting things to start with already.

About 6 months ago shortly after I started detecting I found a smaller more distinct hole on one of the other homesites on this property. After nine feet of digging I had just a few nails and one or two small pieces of glass. I guess I am way ahead on this one already. Just hope it’s not An empty well. Thanks for your input

Two scoops with a backhoe and you’d know for sure. I’m too old to dig by hand but if I could find the right spot id try a backhoe for an outhouse dig. They make those really nice small track hoes now.

Has been considered. My boss has bobcat with backhoe attachment but would be a job just to get it in there. Not sure he would be for that. I can still dig but not for prolonged periods at a time. A lot of rocks and bricks and a 6 inch circumference black walnut to deal with. I ll just keep plugging along.
