Got out to a few different spots on the beach today. On the third spot I ran into some fellow detectorists (ZodiacDiverDave, NS Rick, AQUA and AQUA's pal) so we joined forces for an impromptu group hunt! Just after meeting up with the others I eyeballed a sliver of the ink well in the mud...this is the first intact clay ink well I've found so I was extremely pleased with that. Other finds were a couple musket balls and a HUGE lead ball with a sprue. I'm thinking this is one of many lead balls that would have been loaded into a large 18th century mortar...speaking of which I found a chunk of just such a mortar! It may marry up to the other pieces I have at home!

Good times!

Some rough characters you're hanging out with Romeo :-) that ink well looks great and that's a pretty fiersome group of detectorists right there. Must've been awesome to get out for a day and hang out with the boys.

Yeah, we were quite the motley crew...scaring the townsfolk and seagulls!

ZDD also got a lead ball like mine so I'm reasonably sure that it is from a mortar (grapeshot).

Nice Finds!!! I am not sure but that larger lead ball I would assume was Canister shot.

I do like that ink well, IMO best find of the day.

Great just to just get out in Feb. in cold country.

We did eyeball a couple of cool things on the way back.

Not sure what I found is worthy of wasting the digital memory, at least I didn't get skunked.

Was a great day to be out, had a ball (or should I say several).

Love that inkwell too! Don't see too many earthenware coming out the ground undamaged! The mortar frag is cool, what caliber would that be? Looks pretty big!

Very nice Romeo-1, the inkwell is fantastic . I can't seem to find any of the nice older ones like that. Really cool and the lead ball and frag is more for your large collection. It is always nice to hook up with fellow Tnetters and save some history. :occasion14:

I've found diozens of pieces over the years but this the first unbroken...

Love that HONKIN' big mortar frag. That's a big-un for sure!

You should see a couple other frags I have...one is 28 pounds and may consist of only 1/8th of the total ball...

Found another piece today.. it may fit your puzle....weighs about 6 -8 lbs

You are welcone to it if you want it.

Cool finds! The larger ball almost looks like a very small hand grenade with a fuse well........
